Actionguy describes a solution where you: hit menu then # to get into service mode, scrolled to CLEAR, hit set, scroll to ALL and hit set again
You can also clear the printer's memory of the task that's causing the problem by pressing on the 'eye' button that gives the list of print/copy/fax tasks. press OK to select what kind of task you have, then choose your task to delete it. Finally press OK and Yes (minus) to clear it. Then, you can unplug the printer briefly to clear the error and it will start without the bad job and the error message.

I just ran into this today. The fax was trying to print a legal size page even though RX reduction was turned on and on auto fit. I tried manual reduction sizes, turning it off/on but still would try to print legal size. I even tried taping pages together to make a legal size page and feeding it through the manual feed but it still said 'check paper size'.
I finally had to do a full clear/reset by hitting menu then # to get into service mode. I scrolled to CLEAR and hit set, scrolled to ALL and hit set and that cleared the fax that was screwing things up. I haven't tried sending it a legal size fax yet to see if it does the same thing.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this, this just fixed my problem right off. If this wasn't posted I'd still be spending time messing with it.

I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN ON TWO OCCASIONS, SEVERAL MONTHS APART. THE ONLY SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME WAS TO PULL THE ELECTRICAL PLUG OUT OF THE UNIT AND LEAVE IT THAT WAY OVER THE WEEKEND. RECONNECT AND IT WORKS NORMALLY. IT WILL NOT WORK IF YOU LEAVE THE PLUG OUT JUST OVERNIGHT. I'M GUESSING 2-3 DAYS.

Unable to clear the store with this error showing!.. There were no jobs to clear.
Well, if you unplug the power and allow the unit to discharge,(maybe overnight), the error situation clears.

Have canon mf5700 says check paper size. Powering off doesn't help Changing trays does not help. After powering on again it prints a test page and then gives the warning again.

You need to remove paper tray, and unplug canon. Leave it this way overnight, and in the morning, reinsert the paper tray, and plug back it. This should effectively reset the machine, and clear that error. It worked for me!

If your alarm light is flashing and your printer will not print, press the "copy" button to get the device into the copy mode, once the copy button light is on, press the "Status Monitor" button. The LED panel will then show two lines of words: Line 1 "COPY STATUS" and Line 2 "SELECT JOB TO CANCEL"; then hit the Set button and the screen will show you what print job which has jammed the printer and you then press the - (Minus) button to clear the job. Open and close the front panel and the printer should reset and the warning light go off.
I had trouble locating the problem because my machine tends to stay on the Fax mode and when I pushed the Status Monitor button I would only get information about fax jobs.
Hope you have already figured out the problem. I thought I had better tell someone so I will remember the next time I try to print a job which requires a different size paper than what I have in my printer.
Blessings!
