Kicker zr360 ground problems

My amp will not work unless i stick my thumb on the power terminal and ground it to the chasis. it does it with both the ground and power terminals. i am hoping it is something simple but the guys at radioshack were dumbfounded when they saw what the problem was so... any advice on how to fix it?

i just checked it out and it is not a bad ground terminal or power terminal. i have to put the tip of my thumb on the ground and touch the side of the amp for the amp to work.it is almost as if i am acting as the ground or something. i put a 1 mega ohm capacitor from the terminal to the side of the amp and it still didn't work. i am really confused because everything looks good on the inside.

o.k. here is the situation. the ground for the power source is where the problem is at. once i stick the tip of my thumb on the ground hex nut and touch the side of the amp using the same thumb i have a working amp which powers my kicker solo-baric d-series subwoofer. as soon as i remove my thumb, the sub will stop producing bass( i do not have to press ******* the ground hex nut, all i have to do is make contact with it lightly for my strange method to make my amp work). the power light on the amp remains on but there is no bass. i currently have my amp bridged if that helps and i only looked at the front of the board when i opened it. i had a technician look at it and he said there was probably a blown capacitor but i take that light heartedly since he does not know much since he does not deal with car audio. i live in montana and it is pretty tough to find someone that knows what they are talking about. i will check the other side of the board but the ground seems to be rock solid from feeling it. thanks

p.s. when i touch the power terminal with my thumb like the way i described with the ground, it just produces fuzzy bass so it is the ground where the problem is at/ i have relocated the ground several times and i am only using a foot of ground wire which is attached to the chasis where i have sanded with a wire brush.

It sounds like you have some broken solder connections on the power terminal. if you know how to solder and are good at taking things apart and putting them back together you can fix it pretty easy.

Car amps are not always very easy to take apart if you have never done it before.

Radioshack guys don't know much at all about real repair work, but they can help find a part you might need.

This can probably be fixed at a repair shop for $60 to $80 depending on the shops rates.

You know one thing for sure, the amp will work if you hold the terminal down. If it was an electrical problem that needed some real troubleshooting done, holding your finger on the power terminal would not make it start working again. This has to be a bad connection inside the amp.

Feel free to ask for more help again if you need it, and if this was helpful to you a good rating would be appreciated. Thanks

    Hi, I am back again.

This is a very strange problem indeed.

I just want to make sure that I understand you correctly, so bare with me. Good communication is vital to make sure we are both on the same page. when you respond back to me, don't be hesitate to include as much detail as possible. Too much information is better than too little. (you can tell I believe that by the length of my posts)

When you touch the ground of the power terminal this happens, or is it the ground for the RCA jack input?

I think you are saying it is the ground on the power terminal.

When you say everything looks good on the inside, are you taking the main board out of the amp to look at the bottom where all of the solder connections are at? Or are you looking into the amp with the cover off and the board is still secured on the chassis of the amp?

You can have solder connections on the top side of the board as well. Some boards are what we call double sided, with feed thru's that you can see solder on. And you may see surface mount components on both sides of the board.

To see if the power terminal connections and the RCA jack connections are good, you must take the board out completely.

If you take it out completely, look at the power terminals and at the same time try to move the terminal around and see if you can tell if the metal that feeds thru the board has any movement at all. It should be rock solid.

Just for kicks try this, connect your power terminal ground to another good source of ground. The chassis of the car is the best ground to use. Your amp should already be grounded to the chassis, with as short of a wire as possible. About a foot or two is best. Longer is OK if you don't have a good chassis ground close enough. Don't run the ground wire all the way to the battery. When you do this make sure you are not touching the ground with your finger. Make sure you are using a good clean ground, sand it off or something, so you see bare metal.

Just to let you know, Kicker does not supply parts or service manuals to any repair centers but their own factory service center. As a result I have not repaired many Kicker amplifiers.
I have however repaired hundreds, if not over a thousand, car amplifiers over the last 17 years of working as an audio technician. My shop is an authorized service center for Pioneer, Kenwood, JVC, Panasonic, Alpine and many more brands. So I do know how to repair this type of equipment.

Im trying to figure out how i should wire my Kicker S12L5 sub to my Kicker Zr360 amp. should i wire it for 1ohm and bridge it or what if you could help it would be much appreciated thanks. ...

What is the wattage of the sub? What is the power output of the amp, bridged & not bridged? If the bridged power output will NOT exceed the rated power of the sub then you should bridge it. If it will exceed the rated power of the sub then don't. 8)

No sound or light but there is a hot power

IF THERE ARE NO BLOWN FUSES AND YOU HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE POSITIVE POWER AND GROUND ARE INTACT, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE THE PROPER REMOTE TURN-ON VOLTAGE AT THAT TERMINAL. SOMETIMES THE REMOTE OUT FROM THE RADIO CAN GO OUT AND THIS WILL CAUSE THE AMPLIFIER TO HAVE NO POWER. IF YOU CANNOT VERIFY THIS, THEN REMOVE THE REMOTE LEAD TO THE AMPLIFIER AND PUT A TEMPORARY JUMPER BETWEEN THE POSITIVE POWER TERMINAL AND THE REMOTE TERMINAL. THIS SHOULD TURN ANY AMPLIFIER ON. IF IT DOES NOT POWER UP, THEN THE AMPLIFIER WILL NEED TO BE SERVICED. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE....V

Your amp

Do you have a remote wire set up? if not, you need to run one from your deck so that it can trigger the amp to come on.

My amp

Ok, I had this problem before. If there is a metel part of the car near it, connect the neutral wire to it,. basically you are re-inforcing the ground and it should not "hum" anymore.
