The problem may not be the wire but the video output settings. A lot of other PS3 users have had this problem and the solution is this:
Hold your finger on the power button for 5-10 seconds and you should then hear 2 beeps. The video output should be reset to the default composite cable. You can let go of the power button after the second beep. After you've done this, you should be able to power on with the sound and video working.
You have to set your audio out settings, since your PS3 is probably connected via HDMI and both video and audio passes through it you will need to select your audio source through the PS3 audio output settings and set it to optical out, here is a guide you can follow: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html
Your tv might not receive a signal for a variety of reason.
a. You have the RCA (yellow, white, red) cables plugged in the wrong way b. Your ps3 hasn't recognized your video due to using an hdmi cable and switching around with the settings on your ps3. c. you have changed the video settings on your ps3 and is now set to the wrong video output. d. the cables have become defective and you need to purchase a new one. e. the ps3 has malfunctioned and wont take video anymore. f. the tv input is set wrong. make sure all RCA cables are found in "video output", all hdmi cables are found in "HDMI", and all VGA cables are found under "PC".
There are RCA outputs on the PS3 that will allow you to connect to an older non HD TV. If you do not have RCA (that is the yellow, red and white cables used for video and audio) inputs on your TV, you will need an adapter (most likely a coaxial to RCA adapter found at radio shack, walmart, target, etc.).
