Trying to setup netgear n750 Dual band router on my dimension 4600. My ISP is Big Dog. I've tried numerous cable configurations between the PC and router and can't get the PC to detect the router....

to set a wireless router you have to connect it first to the internet using the internet slot (sometimes named (wlan)and also connect the computer (for now ) in the first port on the router ..and in the Lan card on the computer ..using either a Lan/usb cable if the router has the ports on usb ..or a Lan /Lan cable (RJ45 plug)..
After all are powered and on ..you have to type in the browser (IExporer for ex) ..the address of the router..so that you will get to the log in page for the settings needed in the router ..(set the connection to the main internet ..and also settings for IP range to be assigned for the 4 ports..and to set the wireless parameters ..
To get to this page you have to see the router's IP ..(written on the sticker on the back ) ..and type on the browser like it follows:
ex.http://192.168.1.1 and hit enter.or type any of these ones
• http://www.routerlogin.net
and will have the same effect
a window with a log in tab will appear ..and you will have to complete the spaces for admin with the word admin and for password with the word password ..
these being the default set from factory and can be changed in the settings if you want to ..
If you have a broadband modem based connection ..you will need to change the router's default IP with a much simpler one for not to get into conflict with the modem ..so my advice is to set one with 2 digits ..like 10.10.10.1 or so ..It will be easy to remember and sure not to get in conflict ..cause the router also will assign the ip -es for the computers in this range ..(sometimes the modems have similar factory IP and will be in conflict cause the modem will became the default gateway for the router..when you set it ...
I will link the official manual in case you do not have it ..and there is even explained the wizard setting ..and the manual opne ..The idea is that the wizard setting will not be complete and will only set the router for a wireless connection or for to connect to one port ..It best to do it manually and complete.
Here is the manual
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNDR4000_SM_03NOV2010.pdf
you will need a pdf reader to open it ..such as Adobe reader ..
Good luck ..!

How do i open my nat for my motorola sbg900

for static IPs: check your router settings. router should be in "bridged" mode so that all the devices have own static "lan" ips like 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.0.255 router will have one lan ip static and one global ip(one it gets from service provider) you must manually give one address of 192.168.0.1 / 192.168.0.255 for your xbox. then give correct subnetmask (default 255.255.255.0) and gateway routers lan ip (default 192.168.0.254) you can aslo put routehrs lan ip as default dns if needed dmz or port forwarding is a tool in your router settings you can assign outside ports to specific ip i have only done manual port forwarding, not sure how dmz works.

I am trying to install my netgear Universal Wifi Range Extender WN2000RPT. I have green lights for my connection to the router, the extender is on and it is connected to the main PC. But I only have...

For that you need to check WAN settings and also make sure local ip settings gateway should be your router ip address. Make sure WAN settings are fine connect internet cable to WAN port of router. Then check. You can configure router with below method. Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. Then configure wan settings and lan settings enable wireless if you want to use wifi Then save settings and restart router Then connect cable from internet service provider to WAN port of router and connect ethenet lan cable from computer to lan port of router. . Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

Need basic step-by-step instructions on how to install my router.

To Configure the Router with Internet Access
Connect to one of the wireless router/access point's LAN Ethernet ports, turn off its DHCP server, and give the wireless router a static IP on your LAN:
  1. Connect a PC directly to a LAN port on the wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Power on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Reboot the PC.
  4. Log in to the wireless router though a browser. (Usually 192.168.1.1, with User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed them from the defaults).
  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point’s DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network.
This completes the wireless router/access point configuration.
  • You can now log in to the wireless router/access point at its new address of http://192.168.1.99 and configure wireless features such as WEP and Access Control List
  • UPnP, DMZ, Port Forwarding, and Port Triggering are not used on the wireless router/access point, and it doesn't matter how they are configured.
  1. Configure the LAN IP address to be within the same subnet as your PCs.
    • Take care not to use an IP address already being used.
    • Limit the number of addresses in the DHCP range and assign an IP address outside of the range to the router you want to use as the Access Point.
  2. Disable DHCP on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Connect one of the LAN ports on the wireless router/access point to a LAN port on the Router.
  4. Configure the SSID and any security settings on the wireless PCs to match the wireless router/access point's SSID and security settings.
a. SSIDs must be the same on all wireless devices. (These are case-sensitive: netGEAR is not the same as NETGEAR.)
b. Tip: Make sure the wireless PCs can connect before configuring WEP, WPA-PSK, or other wireless encryption.

I formatted my system and reinstalled Win XP on it, but now I could not use wireless to connect with internet

Make sure you have Wireless network adapter driver installed.

Manually assigned IP address and DNS address as earlier (if your IP setting is not automatically assigned by DHCP server).

If you are using router set your Router IP address as your Default Gateway Address.

If you are using Internet through a Proxy Server then Open "Internet Explorer ",
Click "Tools",
Click "Internet options",
click on tab called "Connection",
Click "Lan settings" Button.
Remove "Automatically detect settings".
Tick "use a proxy server for your LAN....."
Type the IP address of your Proxy Server and the port no.

It will work.

One static IP has internet. how on a LAN?

Hi,

You need two network adopters in your system.
Connect Internet connection in first Network card and from the other network card give it to your Switch or hub
If you are using XP system you can use Internet connection sharing to share the internet in your LAN systems.
Follow the steps to enable using ICS

1.Enable Internet Connection sharing in the LAN properties in the first network card.
2.Now your second network card automatically get an IP address in the range of 192.168.*.* series
3.Connect other systems in the LAN and make sure the system has selected Optain IP atomatically from DHCP.

You are all set.

There is also an advanced way to setup this .
Install IPCOP firewall in a system with two network cards and u can share the internet with the firewall settings

I have just purchased a dlink dir 635 router and am trying to set it up on my Bigpond cable broadband internet. previously I had only a Motorola SBG900 gateway between cable and pc. I now have the new...

The motorola sbg900 is acting as a router itself. I'm assuming this is what you've got? http://promo.bigpond.com/homenetwork/html_new.php

So first, go into your d-link router settings and make sure the THIRD number in the IP address is the same as your modem's ip address. This third number is the "subnet", and it must be teh same for both router and modem.

e.g. if your motorola users ip 192.168.2.1, make sure your d-link is set to 192.168.2.2. Make sure the fourth number is different, but the 1st 2nd and 3rd numbers are the same.

You can figure out what your motorola's ip is by connecting it to your computer, make sure your interent is working, and then run "ipconfig" from a command prompt window. Look for the "Default Gateway" IP. That's your motorola's ip address.

Once the IP addresses match, go into your router's settings and disable the "DHCP server".

Next, plug a network cable to go from one of the LAN ports on your motorola to one of the LAN ports on your d-link. Note that it is LAN port to LAN port. The "internet/wan" port on the d-link is never used for anything.

At this point your d-link will be operating like a "Switch", it knows it is just an extension of your existing network and it won't collide and cause you problems like it was before.

Can't access my computer onthe internet

  1. Make sure that your ISP is not blocking port 80. You can check that here. (Otherwise switch to another port like 8080 or 805)
  2. Have you setup your DDNS service on your router or ensured by other means that no-ip has your up-to-date external IP? (Make sure that your external IP matches the entry at no-ip.com!)
  3. Set your LAN server to a static IP address
  4. Make sure that port forwarding is enabled and pointing to your server.
    - That means: if you run a webserver on port 80, you have to set the external port to 80 and leave the internal blank, unless your internal server listens on a different port.
If this does not help, what exactly do your mean by "Fail to connect"? Is it a 404 error? Please provide details.

I think this might be interesting for some other people too. So please come back and leave a comment!

Good luck!
