Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook

1 Answer

Defintely getting power, but not switching on.

Hi. I've got a Thinkpad T40 which worked one day, the next when I came to switch it on nothing happens. The power is working fine because when I plug in the adaptor the battery light indicates that it's charging (orange) then eventually indicates that it's charged (green). However, the thing simply wont switch on with or without the battery plugged in or the adaptor plugged in. The laptop was not moved from one day to the next, so I've no idea what could be causing the problem. I even tested it with a different adaptor to be sure and I get the same problem.

Any ideas, anyone?

There are several possibilities. Let's start with the easiest two. First the battery, take it out and try starting up only with the power supply. Then the memory chips. If a memory chip fails it can cause a no start in IBM's. Take the memory out and try it. Then try it, putting them in one at a time. If these don't work, then I'm afraid your problem lies within. Namingly the power management chip on the motherboard. The pm chip controls the power input, and allows such functions as switching between battery and AC, and battery charging. The pm chip can go without warning, and just because it lights and shows charging doesn't mean this chip hasn't malfunctioned. I've had several IBM's come through my shop that have experienced the same problem you're describing. I've also had them with problems like; it will only power with the battery, won't charge the battery, will charge battery and only run with battery shuts down while charging, only power under AC, etc... all pm chip related issues. Unfortunately, the only solution is motherboard replacement.

Intermittent Full Power Failure!!!, My IBM Thinkpad T40 has got a liquid spillage on the keyboard while was operating !! , Then it would not power up at all, left it for some few days then tried again,...

Hi,
Powering on the laptop after liquid spillage can damage the hardware (motherboard etc) due to electrical conductivity caused by the material (like salts) in the liquid. If such instance occurs, the laptop is supposed to be opened and cleaned thoroughly to remove any traces of liquid. So, it is recommended that you get it checked/ cleaned by a professional.ONLY if you are not comfortable with working inside electronics, you can download the maintenance manual from the link given below and clean the laptop yourself, otherwise I suggest that you should get you laptop checked by a professional for servicing. Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

Wireless access

There should be a switch on the very front and bottom of your computer that slides back and forth, enabling or disabling the wireless. If this is set in the on position, you can press FN (next to CTRL) and F5 and turn the wireless on or off from there as well.
Even if the physical switch is set to ON, the settings when pressing FN+F5 may be off.

IBM Thinkpad T40 Powers on but only the fan works nothing else

you may have knocked your hard drive lose
are you getting any error messages
you can take the hard drive out put it back in and start up pc to see if that helped.
If the hard drive was'nt the problem you may have caused something else to be lose.
Shut pc down and try hard drive first
