I have a Toshiba Laptop that is WiFi capable. Do I still need to buy a card for my laptop in order to use it with a wireless router?

You would not need a specific card for your laptop unless you wanted to upgrade to N technology. You would need a Internet Service Provider (ect. cable, verizon) and a router. I'd have Geek Squad setup your router to ensure it is properly setup and secure.

Get 5Ghz on laptop.

Find and check a wireless network label or sticker on your laptop. The Wi-Fi standard is written there. It indicates which capability your wireless card has.
  • 802.11b/g/n (or "bgn") --> your card supports 2.4 GHz band only. There is no way to activate 5 GHz without you buy new "Wi-Fi stick" having 5 GHz support.
  • 802.11a/b/g/n (or "abgn" or "abg") or 802.11ac --> your card is 5 GHz capable. Only laptop card setting change should be needed to enable 5 GHz radio.
The "a" means the 5 GHz.
For wireless standard logo types see a picture on this link:
Wireless Ethernet 820 11a To 820 11g Network Basics Networking Basics LAN...

Use any dual-band cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, S6...) and free WiFi Analyzer Android application to check your router is transmitting 5 GHz too (channels 34 and higher).

The wireless card may be bad or the attenna may not be working correctly. Try reloading the driver or buy a USB wireless card.

How do I restore my WIFI capability? I cannot

It sounds like the laptop is not the problem. Have you tried to "power cycle" your router (unplug the power and plug back in)? You may need to power cycle your BroadBand modem first.

If that does not work, check with your internet service provider to make sure they are up.

You can always double check the laptop at a free wireless hotspot in town. I would need more info to give any more suggestions.

How do I connect my netgear router to my desktop internet to use with my laptop. Followed instructions but when cable is disconnect from my laptop I can't connect to the internet

First Connect the Desktop with Netgear Router with the Ethernet cable. Open the Netgear GUI and configure a Wireless Network. Once its configured, switch On the WiFi switch from your Laptop and try to connect your Laptop. Make sure your laptop has an in-built Wifi adapter, if it doesn't then you would need to buy an USB based Wifi Adapter.

Also if you want to use the Internet with your Desktop PC without being connected with the Netgear Router then make sure it has Wireless connection capability.

Upgrade wifi sofware on gatway laptop lt3116h. bad internet connect on the main floor. how to upgrade software

Do you want to update your software or do you want to update your equipment? Updating your software would be just like applying an update to your WiFi software through the internet. Upgrading your equipment would be like buying a higher end or different ranged wireless card for your laptop. This would increase your capabilities of wireless internet coverage. You could also buy a better router if the "main floor's" wireless access point (router) is not that strong-signaled. It's not that hard to change your wireless card within your laptop. There's plenty of websites that you could find through google that could assist you with that. Just gotta be willing to strap out the cash. Good Luck!

How is wireless capability switched on my laptop

Check the BIOS setting - the wireless card needs to be enabled.
Next check Control Panel - Device Manager - Network Connections. The wireless card it should be enabled and working. If it has a yellow ? against the wireless card then the wireless card driver needs to be installed.

Bought a toshiba satel laptop and want to router it to dell dimen

You don't need a router for the laptop it has a wireless card in it already, buy a router for your home PC and I would buy a linksys with cap 5 network cables and wireless connections so you can use the printer off of the home computer PC. If you have high speed Internet you can request for a router for free with a wireless and cap 5-cable capacity.
