Open up the PC and check the power connector for your dvd drive, this may have come off.

DVD LightScribe R/RW drive not recognized by OS on HP Pavilion D4100Y 32 bit Windows XP

Hi Bob.

You will have to take the side panel off the computer and check that the power cable is connected to the DVD/RW, if it is and you have no LED indicators or the tray won't open it is a strong possibility that that the drive itself has failed and you will need to replace it with a new one. Optical drives are very cheap these days not costing much over 20 dollars or 10 pounds. DVD optical drives are plug and play so the operating system will already have the drivers preinstalled.

Inserting a cd rom

Click Start/My Computer then Right Click on the cd drive and click EJECT.

If it does not open, then you will have to manually open it. Take a Paper Clip (Gem Clip) and straighten it out then get on your knees in front of the computer facing the CD Drive. You will see a tiny hole on the CD Drawer, so take the Paper Clip and push it into the hole to force the drawer to open. That's the purpose of the little hole so don't be afraid thinking you might break something.

I have a Desk top Dell computer, but I am having problems with the modem, I can't get the disk drive door to open, computer works great

I don't know why the drawer not opening would give you modem problems.
If you need to open the CD drawer, you can go to "my computer" (just "computer in Win7), right click on the CD icon and choose "eject."
Or, using a large paper clip or similar object, insert it into the little hole on the front of the CD and push gently. It will release the drawer and start to open it. You can then pull it open.

The Pioneer dvd+-rw DR-K17Y ata Device in my Dell Inspiron E1705 has stopped working. The drawer won't open (without the help of an unbent paper clip) and the disc does not spin up. Application software...

This sounds as a hardware problem, maybe a gear or a servo engine. Its a common problem since the mechanism is small and mostly plastic. If you have the chance use a live cd or live usb to see if it is not a windows problem. In my opinion the best solution is to replace the drive.

CD Rom drawers do not open or close, drive belts have popped out

Unfortunatly, these belts are not availible for consumer purchase and, most service centers will just replace the entire device. i have used regular rubber bands that are identical in size to run many rom drives. this method seems to work just fine.

Its very unfortunate when these original belts break and, there is no replacment belt on the market. the only option is to purchae a store bought rubber band that matches the same size as the broken original band. this will work.
