Go into the device manager and check to see if the drivers for the ethernet controller are there. If they are, uninstall and reinstall doing a hardware search, if that doesn't fix it then it's a faulty port. (should be under warranty) If the drivers are not there, then you will need to use another computer to go to Dell's support site, download and burn the drivers to a disc, in order to install them into your new machine. Also while you're in the device manager, look for any other device drivers you may need, you will recognize any devices that don't have drivers by a yellow question mark. You might as well burn all of them you need to one disc just in case you need them in the future.

Tip

Share Your Internet Connection with More Than One Computer- The Easy Way

Here is a simple way share your home internet connection with more than one computer. This will work for both wired and wireless and doesn't require alot of technical or computer skills to accomplish. I'm sure there are other ways, but if you're looking for a simple repeatable setup, here it is.

If you've got a dsl connection through a dsl modem, this TIP will work for you.
If you've got a cable modem, this TIP will work just as well.

Here's a list of what you'll need.

  1. Dsl or cable modem that works on your system and you can access internet with one computer (If you're using the internet, most likely you've got this already).
  2. Wired (Ethernet) or Wireless Router (wifi routers have 4-6 ethernet ports also).
  3. For Wired: Ethernet cable to connect modem to router.
  4. For Wireless: Wifi compatible computer or wifi card for your computer (follow manufacturer's instructions for proper install).
Procedure:
  1. Turn all components off. This includes anything on your existing network- computer, modem, printer and any router you may currently be using.
  2. With all power off, connect an ethernet cable between your modem and your new cable/dsl router(wired or wireless).
  3. Turn on the power to your new router only and let it boot up completely.
  4. Turn on the dsl/cable modem and allow it to boot. Since the router was booted first, the modem with recognize the router's MAC address (ethernet numerical address) and connect that address to the internet.
  5. Connect all the other components onto the router with the ethernet cables as needed and turn on the components- no particular order is necessary after the router and modem are booted. Your router will assign MAC addresses to all the ethernet components. Once the MAC address is assigned, your computer should work correctly with the internet and shouldn't drop out when the second computer is turned on.
  6. For wireless connections, boot up your computer with the properly installed Wifi card, airport card and allow it to "find" your router. Once you get confirmation of the signal, you're good to go.
Following this procedure will allow your modem, your router to use their designed software to connect you without a bunch of programming. You will actually enjoy having more than one computer sharing an internet connection.

Remember this procedure and follow the steps again if you lose power and have to reboot your network.

Hey. I want to use my Netgear WNR1000 as an extra accespoint for better range, is it possible?

Step 1: Make sure your old router is working. Step 1a: Connect the Broadband modem to your OLD_ROUTER's Internet (WAN) port. Then connect the computer to one of the four available ports on your router through an Ethernet cable.
Step 1b: Make sure that the Internet connection is working on your computer and on your wireless devices.
Step 2: Configure your new router
Most routers have an IP address of 192.168.1.1 so before you connect them, you need to ensure that they have been assigned two different IP addresses.
Step 2a: Shut down your OLD_ROUTER and the modem. Also unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer.
Step 2b. Plug the Ethernet cable into any of the numbered ports of NEW_ROUTER and connect the other end to your computer. Switch on the NEW_ROUTER.
Step 2c. Access the web dashboard of NEW_ROUTER (192.168.1.1) and change the local IP address to something like 192.168.2.1 so that there's no conflict with the old router. Save the changes.
Step 2d. Test the SSID name of the new router and make sure it's different from the old router. Also make sure that SSID broadcast is turned on. Save the changes.
Step 3: Connect the two routers
Step 3a. Connect the modem to the Internet Port of the OLD_ROUTER.
Step 3b. Connect one of the number ports of OLD_ROUTER to your computer.
Step 3c. Connect another free port on the OLD_ROUTER to the Internet Port of your NEW_ROUTER using an Ethernet or LAN cable.

The ethernet connection goes to your computer via a standard Cat5e patch cable. There is no USB that I know of...
Cablevision wire goes to the modem. It should be the first device on the cablevision wire. If you need a splitter, it needs to be a GOOD one, connected DIRECTLY to the incoming Cablevision wire as it enters the house. Use good copper wire.

Order of events:
Connect the cablevision wire to the Modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the computer and the modem.
Power on the cable modem.
Right click the network Icon near the clock and click 'repair' (Or reboot the computer)
Apply for and get an account for cable Internet from your Cable company.
After a few days, cable Internet should work.

I don't know how to connect my router. please help

If you have DSL or cable internet, disconnect the ethernet cable going from the DSL or cable internet modem to the computer. Disconnect the end of that cable that plugs into the modem. Connect an ethernet cable from your cable or DSL modem to the router where it says something like "modem", "internet", or "in". If the router is a wired router, connect the ethernet cable that is still attached to the computer to any open ethernet port on the router.

Connecting to internet

Ok, cable (coax) comes in from wall and attaches to modem. Ethernet cable goes from modem to WAN Port of router. You may have to reboot both devices to ensure that your modem (internet service provider) assigns IP address to your router. If PC is close enough, attach new ethernet cable from one of the 4 ports on your router down to your PC's ethernet adapter. (where your modem used to plug into). Router will now assign an IP address to your PC and you should be able to access the www.

Good Luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Connect two computers together

Hi,

Technically, yes. Both computers should have an Ethernet port (LAN), a crossover networking cable, peer to peer networking using static IP add, and Internet Connection Sharing on the PC with the Wireless Internet Connection. If by chance the PC with the Internet access is already using its Ethernet port, a second NIC could be installed.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
