Hey helen185,

If you've had to restore your computer and need to reinstall Norton Anti-Virus, you should be able to download the software a second time as long as you have access to your order number and/or Norton account information. You should be able to do so by following this link:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/cs/kbload.jsp?docurl=step_2007102605434976&selected_nav=1&prev_id=downloads_orders_01&prev_link=link_02

Please keep in mind that the software you purchased may need to be Norton 2006 or a more recent edition in order to be downloaded a second time, as information provided by the publisher indicates that older downloads are no longer available.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

It restarts automatically and reboots continue.........

You probably have a boot sector virus and/or a corrupted bios. you should stop trying to boot normally, as you could damage your hard drive.

Try booting into safe mode. If you succeed, download malware bytes and scan to try and clear the virus. If this will not work you need either bootable operating system CD or DVD or bootable boot repair utility (Norton Bootable Recovery Tool).

If you have vital data on the laptop, you can remove the hard drive and use a hard drive dock or external hard drive caddy to back the important data up onto an external hard drive, but for that you need another computer (or a long session in an internet cafe).

For the future, if you want value for money, avast! fee edition version 6 is a perfectly adequate antivirus as long as you have some additional anti spyware installed (malware bytes/superantispyware/spyware terminator/spywaredoctor are all good). If you're willing to pay, get Kaspersky Anti Virus, use a different browser (google chrome, firefox, opera, safari, etc.), do regular scans, disk clean ups, registry editing and hdd defragmentations, create regular restore points to resolve minor system corruptions or crashes and use your anti virus to create regular custom made Recovery Disks on an over writable cd-rw or dvd-rw when your pc is running well, for major system corruptions or crashes or failures.

Back up important data to 2 separate external hard drives (one regularly connected, one connected only occasionally and kept separately as an archive - an insurance policy). be sensible when browsing new, unfamiliar websites. Be particularly vigilant on danger sites such as file sharing, social networking. develop the habit of keeping your mouse cursor near the blue return arrow, top left to quickly leave a web page showing initial signs of infection. do not be seduced by unsolicited free security scans and downloads while browsing.

If you see signs of infection starting and leaving the infecting page doesn't stop it develop the habit of a quick sequence of closing all windows and dialogue boxes with the red button x top right, then, if necessary, killing your router with the power switch, then ctrl+alt+del>task manager>end process, then set anti virus to do a boot scan, then restart the pc.

An anti virus is like a motorcycle crash helmet. It is not a guarantee that you will not suffer serious damage, your real safety relies on foresight, preparedness, vigilance, care, precaution, common sense and calm, swift, considered, practiced reactions in the face of danger that you employ while riding the bike. The helmet is just an extra element of protection and reassurance. An anti virus is the same while using a pc.

Finally, if your pc has vital data on it for work or other important functions, then use the main pc for important things and, if you can afford it invest £170 in a net book for fun, frivolous, non-essential browsing and downloading.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

My norton anti virus

Hi,
I haven't used Norton in years. The reason is that Norton is not as good a anti virus program as another I found. If you are up for a change and to a very good anti virus program then check out AVG. It is free and there is also a version you can buy with even more features. I have always used the free version and I have never had a virus on my computer. I am sending you the link so you can check it out. Hope it helps you as much as it did me.

Norton Anti-virus will not launch

If you have access to another computer download avast anti-virus and malwarebytes anti-malware and burn to cd or use a flash drive. Malwarebytes will remove that PC Defender rouge anti-virus software and any other malware you may have,

If you don't have another computer you can download the files to try booting into safe mode with networking. This option should allow you to download and install the programs above,

If your able to download them run anti-malware first. Let t fix what it can. Then install avast anti-virus, when asked if you want to schedule a boot time scan say yes, then when asked to reboot say no and open avast and update it, When prompted to reboot do so.

Hope this helps

Use a good anti-virus software. There are many free ones, like the very popular AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. Also, the Avast! Home Edition and Windows Defender are great. You can also try the Microsoft Windows Maliculous Software Removal Tool.

The downloads are available at CNET Download.com and the last one is a special program available only at the Microsoft Download Center. It has to be downloaded, used and then removed from the PC. It is updated every month, so you need to make sure that you use it every month after downloading from the site.

To prevent damage, later on you must have backups of the files on your PC, either on hard disks or DVDs. You can use a back-up software like the preloaded Windows Backup and Restore Center available in Windows Vista. You can also copy your important software and data manually onto these media.

Don't backup now, or you are going to backup the virus too (if it is really there) and waste your time. Remember, the virus cannot do anything while the computer is switched off.
