Serial port download problem - Dimera 3500

By Rogers - usenet poster

Hi-

I have a Relisys Dimera 3500. The drivers & software seem to be
installed properly, since the camera is recognized in the software.
The problem is the camera will not stay on when connected to a serial
port for download. I'm using an A/C adapter, and that works fine as
long as the camera isn't connected to the PC. Once I connect the
camera to the PC via the supplied serial cable the power won't stay
on, so I can't download anything. I've tried it on 2 separate PCs, and
I have no problems with the serial port on PC either otherwise.

Does anyone know why this is happening & what to do?

Hello-

I've tried it this way as well, but the camera still turns off as soon
as I plug in the serial cable, regardless of the power-up sequence.
I'm going to get a battery just to take the power adapter out of the
equation. The serial plug is definitely fully inserted.

Thanks again-

Susan

Susan,
I saw in rec.photo.digital some other posts where you said you were plugging
in the camera to the computer before the computer was started.
Lets outline the steps to download images from the Dimera 3500.

Do not plug in the serial cord to the camera untill the computer is fully
running!

Computer is running. Serial cable is connected to serial port on computer.

How to download pictures from Digital Camera
1. First, make sure the TWAIN driver and application software are installed
correctly.
2. Connect the camera to your computer (serial port).
3. Turn on the camera
4. Start TWAIN compatible software
5. Select the TWAIN driver: You do not need to repeat this step for
subsequent use
of the TWAIN driver unless you switch devices.
6. Acquire or import image from the camera: Choose File > Acquire > TWAIN
to
start the digital camera driver.
7. Switch to the download mode in the TWAIN driver User Interface
8. Select the image(s) and click Download button to download

My first guess is the power adapter is not working. Make sure you have the
correct power adapter. The Relisys Dimera 3500 camera requires 3 volts at 1
ampere (1000 ma) regulated.

I also found on my computer, I had to go in to the computer's BIOS and set the
com port to a fixed address for the camera software to download from the
camera.

Hi- The adapter is 3v/1000mA, and the camera stays powered on until I
attach the serial cable, so I don't think it's the adapter. The COM
port is at a fixed address. I wonder if the problem is the serial
cable itself.

Thanks-

What OS are you using? I don't think that camera and software will work
correctly on Windows XP. It is OK with Win 98SE.

You are plugging the Stereo plug all the way into the camera connector. It
must seat all the way to the base of the plug.

For pictures of the RS232 connector, and information on serial camera
connection.
http://www.carlmcmillan.com/se rial_cable_pinout.htm

If you have a ohm meter, (multitester which you can buy at Radio Shack $15)
you can check the cable. This is the pin-out for the serial cable for the
Relisys Dimera 3500 camera.

The RS-232 end usually has numbers beside the pins.

Connector cable pinout (9 pin female RS-232 to 3.5mm stereo plug (1/8") )
2 - tip  Receive data on computer end
3 - Middle  Transmit data on computer end
5 - Base   Signal ground on computer end

Check to see if each connection is good. To measure pins on RS-232, straighten
a paper clip(regular not jumbo) and stick into pin, put lead from tester on
paper clip. Example: One lead of tester on pin 2 of rs-232 other lead of
tester on tip of stereo plug, meter reads 0 ohms = good. Infinity=bad.

Check to see if there is a short (0 ohms)from the Base of stereo plug to any
of the other connections.
If you find a short, get another cable.

Also if you have a volt meter(see above), check the power adapter to see if it
really has 3 volts output.
