I am currently running both Windows XP and Vista on my laptop and find it quite strange that I have the following problems on BOTH operating systems:
1) Inserting a blank DVD makes my drive show up as "CD drive".
2) Inserting a video DVD makes things crash. The drive doesn't sound like it will "spin up". However, going into VLC media player and loading the disc allows me to play it.
3) Data discs won't load. I again get the failure of the drive to "spin up", and I have to eject it to stop things from freezing.
4) In safe mode for Vista and XP, the drive will detect all discs fine. I can open them up and explore them...EXCEPT DVD's...they still won't work properly unless played in VLC player.
I would be very grateful to any sort of help on this because it has me baffled! I thought it was a hardware issue to begin with...but after seeing that I can get various discs to work, I am led to believe it is a software issue.
I am not posting a solution, but may be the same problem. I have dell inspiron 510m with DVD - RW sony A 56 It had burnt one DVD till now, but it can NOT burn any more DVDs. I have tried burning using windows XP-SP2, Nero 6, Nero 8, burn my files 3.01 BUT no use. The only thing I got is different error messages. I changed many types of DVD-Rom, from sony, benq..trying to rule out the storge media itself as source of error, but again no use. Astonishingly, it works a CD-ROM Burner very well. Any suggestions?

This is because your unit is indeed just a CD-RW unit - it doesn't have the DVD part. If you need that then you will need to replace it with a combo or a DVD- RW unit., something like
are u copying the disc on the fly i mean directly from dvd rom to dvd rw it sometimes generate this error when reading drive stops giving data due to some error and suddenly bcoz of that the writing drive leavve the session un closed and give an error the solution is first copy ur disc on the hard drive and then copy it on another disc on the fly copying is not safe otherwise also try this
pls try to clean the lens of the drive as follows
due to dusty environment and excessive use lens gets dusty and then have problems in reading or writing dvd 's and cd's
the dvd tray u can see that shiny eye like thing try cleaning th lens
gently in round movement with a tissue paper or very soft cloth used to
clean lcd screens or cotton bud good quality see if it works , other wise ur DVD drive lens got
weak from use now adays service centers are getting tons of them
everyday for replacements
u can try that software thing as well but i dont think it will solve ur problem
If you mean the CD or DVD drive,,,then you can take a paper clip and bend it straight,,then put the paper clip into the tiny hole in the front of the CD tray and gently push,,,this will open the tray enough for you to grip it by hand and pull it out the rest of the way.
This is a problem with the DVD Writer model.
SONY DVD RW AW-G170a has problems reading DVD+/- R/RW Discs.
But there is no problem with any of the DVD+/- R/RW Dual Layer, DVD Ram or CD+/- R/RW Discs.
It is the reason that this DVD Writer lacks the correct bitsetting for DVD+/- R/RW Discs.
There is nothing else you could do other than replacing the wirter with some other model.
I have a CD/DVD r/w drive and it only says NEC DVD +RW. That is just the text the manufacturer has embedded in the device, not the results of any diagnostics.
You've mentioned what program you are playing DVDs with but what are you playing your audio CDs with and are they commercial audio CDs?
Have you tried running a diagnostic on your drive? Here is a link to the Sony CD/DVD diagnostic tool. Its meant for Sony drives but I have used this successfully on other drives in the past. When prompted for a blank disk us a CD.
