Sounds like you got a defective bulb. Make sure it is for 120 volts or thereabouts....not 6 or 12.

Yes. It is possible that you jostled the bulb on installation. It the bulb is a screw bulb, be sure it is installed firmly. Before you put it in, have a look at the socket. Is it clean and bright or dirty? If not clean and bright and with the unit unplugged, use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Believe it or not, dirty contacts can burn out a bulb!

On a Kenmore side by side refrigerator that has two light bulb sections, what causes the lights not to work?

The door switch provides a source of power to two things. Yes the door switch can be bad. What is your model number? There was some models that left the lights on when the door was closed and people would unscrew the bulbs just to sell them to people unaware. That problem was related to a bad relay on the motherboard

Lights in my kenmore refrigerator, freezer on bottom, burned out. I purchased two 60w bulbs and replaced them. I plugged in the refrigerator and the lights were on. Then a couple of minutes later,

Hello Sharon;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You can not put normal house hold appliance bulbs in appliances. There are special bulbs for refrigerators, clothes dryers and close washers.

The bulbs are usually available in the local market and marked; "Refrigerator" and Freezer".

You may have a bad door switch. But, I am more prone to go with the wrong service bulb.

I have a GE Model number GSS23WSTASS side by side refrigerator and when I open the door, it smells like something is hot or like something is burning. What could this be? I doesn't smell while the doors...

The first thing I would check is the light bulb and light bulb diffuser.
If the bulb was replaced with either the wrong shape or the wrong wattage (higher) the bulb could be touching the disfuser (shade) or some other part of the mount.. if the bulb is too high of a wattage the heat could damage the mount and shade..

I believe that is a 60 watt appliance bulb. (soft white)..

Also this model uses a "special" light bulb for the defrost cycle. If you unit is very frosty on the inside.. frost build up could cause the fan to stop running.. you should hear a fan running when you open the freeze side. If that bulb was burned out. you would have a frost problem regardless.

You didn't mention which side smells like this.. chances are it's the fresh food side.. again.. check the bulbs..

The last thing would be a circuit board in the door.. but doubtful.. go for the simple stuff first.
Even a wrapper or food item may have become lodged between the bulb and the shade/difuser.

Good luck!

How to change light bulb in refrigerator

Hello,

Unplug the Whirlpool refrigerator from the electrical outlet.
Step 2
Locate the bulb on the inside of the Whirlpool refrigerator.
Step 3
Remove the light cover. Usually these just snap off, but, on some models, they may need to be unscrewed. Use your screwdriver to unscrew the light cover retaining screws (if required).
Step 4
Unscrew the old light bulb.
Step 5
Screw in the new light bulb.
Step 6
Replace the light cover. Plug the Whirlpool refrigerator back in. Test your new light bulb.
Also note that the below can also work

Unplug refrigerator or disconnect power.
Slide the light bulb cover toward the back of the compartment to release it from the light assembly.
Replace burned-out bulb(s) with appliance light bulb(s) no greater than 40 watts.
Replace the light bulb cover by inserting the tabs on the cover into the liner holes on each side of light assembly. Slide the cover toward the front until it locks into place.

NOTE: Do not force the cover beyond its locking point; doing so may damage the light cover.
Plug in refrigerator or reconnect power.
To change the freezer light bulb:

Unplug refrigerator or disconnect power.

NOTE: You may need to remove the upper freezer shelf or basket to access the light assembly.
The light bulb cover opens from the back. Firmly press forward on the notches in the back of the cover and pull down the cover.

Remove the cover and replace the burned-out bulb with an appliance bulb no greater than 40 watts.
Insert the front tabs of the cover into the liner and snap the back portion of the cover over the light assembly.
Plug in refrigerator or reconnect power.

Good luck in applying the solution

I just saved my fridge / home too, smelled what I thought to be an electrical fire when I opened the Trio doors, immediately looked at the bulbs as a probable cause, and sure enough, the base of the bulb sockets were burned-brown and the plastic housing was to hot to touch without a hot-mit.
Unscrewed the bulbs and set aside out of children's reach and combustable materials.

I'm filing a complaint and service repair today. 8/3/08
