These words are used interchangeably nowadays, but technically a battery is a group of cells. An AA "battery" is actually a single cell, whereas a car battery is 6 cells in one box wired in series- each cell providing 2 volts for a total of 12 volts. The 9 volt battery used in smoke alarms is also a true battery, made up of six cells packaged together, each providing 1.5 volts. Most other "batteries" are really single cells, but there is no way to make people use the correct technical terms.
