On a second note to this solution It is sometimes necessary to delete the printer from the registry. This is acomplised by using the search function in the start menu then find all associated files for that printer, Right click on the file and delete it, and all files pertaining to the printer. Good luck be mucho blessed...Mark

Picked up a Canon S450 - nice printer, but....

Keep running the cleaning cycle. You may have to run 20X's to break the clog. And I would not perform any of the "maneuvers" you mentioned. Alcohol will turn the plastic to mush.

Canon S450

From what I can tell the 6 orange lights indicate a print head failure. Why the print head has failed is another question maybe too old (I've read somewhere that they only operate for a fixed amount of time), maybe printed enough pages (somewhere else indicated that they only print a fixed number of pages). The solution is to replace the printhead (not just the ink tanks).

There is no way to know which print head needs replacing, so unless you have a spare one you will just have to choose which to change, and if you get it wrong try the other one. It appears to be an expensive way of solving the problem (but I have just found it cheaper to buy a print head which comes with 3 tanks than to buy 3 separate tanks!).

G'Day Dennis,
OK try turning off printer at power point and leave for 10 to 15 minutes before starting again then try this reset proceedure again.
If it doesn't work, a new printer might be cheaper than taking yours for service, but if you use compatible inks, the price differance for cartridges might make a repair worthwhile.

Prints only the top 3 inches or so of a web or email page

This is a beginning to be a really common problem with this type of Canon. I had one that did this too,It sounds like your printheads or rollers are dirty and clogged. You need to thoroughly clean the area where the cartidges sit in (printheads) new cartridges and all the allignments in the world will not resolve clogs, and it will not be sufficient to just rely on the canons own cleaning, you have to manually do it with cleaning solution and cotton buds (q-tips)

New printer? Or have you changed them before? Make doubly sure all tape is off the new cartridge and that you did not accidentally touch the gold surface of cartridge (can result in read errors). Wipe it very softly with a non perfumed baby wipe, yes! a baby wipe! I have had good success this way. Also do a clean with the printers own cleaning system and print a test page after each clean or step. Run virus checks and spyware checks on pc just in case. Does it give any other error messages? You may have a badly clogged printhead (so notorious this range of canons for clogs) use proper cleaning solution and cotton buds and thoroughly clean where cartrigde goes (printhead) do not be afraid, repeat until no residue comes away. Try printing now.
