Upon startup, quickly hit Delete; this will get you into the main BIOS menu - check with Compaq's documentation, and the BIOS documentation for specifics, but generally you want to format a FAT32 partition

Desktop or Laptop ????....
Unfortunately, it is likely that your computer will encounter some form of system error, malware function or hard-drive crash that causes the operating system to become unstable.
To help computer users resolve these issues, HP includes the HP Recovery Manager in each Compaq Presario.
Use the Recovery Manager to recover your system without the need for any additional software CDs, technical support or repair service.
The recovery process should only be used as a last step in troubleshooting your computer, as all personal data files will be erased during the recovery.

Close any programs running on your computer and remove any unnecessary hardware devices that are connected to the computer.
Restart the computer. Press the "F11" key once your computer begins to start up again and before the Windows logo appears.
The HP Recovery Manager will automatically launch.
Click the "System Recovery" option and click "Next." Select "No" in the Microsoft restore window that opens and click "Next."
Select the "Backup Your Files First" option and connect an external hard drive or insert a blank DVD or CD to store the backup files.
Follow the instructions in the wizard to select the files you want to save.
Click "Next" to begin the restore process.
The Recovery Manager will reformat the hard drives and recover the system to a functional operating condition.

How to do System Restore when the computer doesn't even boot to Safe Mode in...

System Restore is assumed to be the best method to recover the system from Registry or System file errors. Its easy to perform and is effective, no doubt. But what happens when the system doesn't even boot to the desktop, neither in Normal mode, nor in Safe Mode. How do you do a System Restore then. For Vista and Win 7 users, its a piece of cake, since the WinRE provides them the direct option to System Restore from the installation/repair CD. But what for the XP users?

The following method is very useful and serves as a bliss for Windows XP users to recover their system from crashes due to Registry or System file failures. All you need for the method is a Windows XP installation CD. (This is not a re-installation process. All data and settings are intact after the operation.)

Step 1: Boot to the Recovery Console
  • Insert the Windows XP CD into the computer.
  • Turn the computer off.
  • Setup the computer to boot from cd: either by pressing F2, F9 or Delete to go in BIOS and changing the boot sequence or by pressing F12 on Dell computers to launch the Boot Device Menu.
  • As soon as you get the message 'Press any key to boot from the cd', hit enter.
  • Wait for the Windows Setup to initialize
  • At the Welcome to Setup screen press R to repair windows using recovery console.
  • You will be prompted to choose a Windows installation. Press 1 on the top of the keyboard and then press Enter.
  • You will be prompted to enter the Administrator password. Press Enter if no password was set.
Step 2: Accessing the Restore points.
Type the following commands in the Recovery Console.

cd system~1

If you get an Access Denied error:
  • Type the following commands to change the directory to c:windowssystem32config:
    cd windows
    cd system32
    cd config
  • Rename the system branch of the registry. That will allow us to access the system restore folder from inside the Recovery Console. In case the process fails and you want to perform a Windows Repair you will need to rename system.bak to system again.
    ren system system.bak
  • Type exit to leave the recovery console and to restart the computer.
  • Go back into the Recovery Console and repeat Step 2.
cd _resto~1

If the _resto~1 folder exists, inside it there are several folders named RP1, RP2. These are restore points. RP1 is the oldest restore point. You can use dir to view what RP folders are available. If there is no _resto~1 folder or if there are no restore points inside it:
  • Type the following commands:
    cd
    cd windows
    cd system32
    cd config
    copy c:\windows\repair\system system
  • If you are getting a file not found error try:
    copy c:\windows\repair\system.bak system
  • Then type the following :
  • copy c:\windows\repair\security security
  • copy c:\windows\repair\software software
  • copy c:\windows\repair\sam sam
  • copy c:\windows\repair\default default
  • exit
  • You will be able to boot into a altered version of the operating system. Backup your files from the c:Documents and Settings folder and then reinstall the operating system.
Step 3: Choose the most convenient RP folder.
Supposing we have RP3 available let's type in:

cd rp3

Change the directory to snapshot:

cd snapshot

Step 4: Restore the main registry branches.
If you are being asked if you want to overwrite type in y to agree.

copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software

The following commands are most of the time optional however the process might not work if they are not executed

copy _registry_machine_security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy _registry_machine_sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy _registry_user_.default c:\windows\system32\config\default

Type exit to reboot the system. Start the computer normally.

Thanks,
Abhishek

My inspiron 1018 won't boot. i need to reinstall or repair my software. it does not have a cd drive. please advice action.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 series of netbooks come with recovery software that can restore your netbook's original factory settings. Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbooks with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 can be recovered to the factory settings using a recovery partition on the hard drive.
Windows Vista or 7
Turn on or restart your Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook. Press the "F8" key repeatedly when the "Dell" logo appears on the screen to be redirected to the "Advanced Boot Options" menu.
Highlight "Repair Your Computer," and then press "Enter."
Highlight the language layout you want to use for your keyboard and click "Next." Enter your username and password if prompted. Click "OK."
Click "Dell Factory Image Restore," and then click "Next." The recovery software on some Dell Mini systems may require you to click "Dell Factory Tools" followed by "Dell Factory Image Restore" and "Next."
Click "Next" if you understand the netbook will be restored to its original factory settings. The recovery process will begin.
Click "Finish" when a message appears saying the recovery is complete. The netbook will restart and boot up to the Windows Vista or Windows 7 set-up screen, where you can begin personalizing your netbook.

Windows XP Recovery
Turn on the computer. Press the "Ctrl" and "F11" keys at the same time while the computer is booting up to access the recovery software.
Click "Restore."
Click "Confirm" to begin the recovery process, which shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes.
Click "Finish" to restart the computer and finalize the installation. Click "Yes" to restart the netbook again. The computer will boot up to the Windows XP setup screen

Here is a link which will take you to the site which will allow you to download a ZIP file with a WEB PAGE type service manual for your 1018, after a 45 second wait. (They want you to sign up for premium service but NOT NEEDED) Click again after wait?
After download, open the ZIP file and copy all contents to a new folder. Double click the Contents.html file to open in a web browser, then use the built in shortcuts to navigate the manual.

How to fix ntdlr is missing?

substitute the NTLDR file in the right place. if you have access to another computer, copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM which is available from the recovery CD which comes with computer. If you do not have the recovery CD, they were available from another computer using the same Operating System (Windows XP in your case). The location was C:\i386\ntldr C:\i386\ntdetect.com then use a bootable disc to restart the computer (the Win XP bootable CD may not work, a Win 98 bootable CD will work). After entering MS DOS mode, copy these 2 files to the C drive in the proper location. After restart, then pressing F10 on start up (used for system recovery on my computer), start the repair of Windows via system recovery (which was not possible earlier). This reinstalled all Windows drivers and system files, while preserving all data on my computer.

NTLDR MSSING, how can i solve this?

NTLDR is short for NT loader – a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Microsoft Windows NT load. So when it goes missing for some reason, your windows cannot load.
Cause:
1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
3. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.
4. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32.
6. New hard disk drive being added.
7. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.
8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.
if there is attached drive ,remove the drive first before restarting the system if not then if you had access to another computer, copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM which is available from the recovery CD which comes with computer. If you do not have the recovery CD, its available on microsoft site or is available from another computer using the same Operating System (Windows XP ). The location may be C:\i386\ntldr C:\i386\ntdetect.com use a bootable disc to restart the computer (the Win XP bootable CD or Win 98 bootable CD worked). After entering MS DOS mode, copy these 2 files to the C drive in the proper location. After restart, then pressing F10 on start up (used for system recovery ), then start the repair of Windows via system recovery This will reinstalled all Windows drivers and system files, while preserving all data on your computer.

Xp recovery

You need to download all the drivers installer files from manufacturer website first, and also all the software you want to install automatically with Windows. Then you build a Windows Xp boot CD with all the software setup embedded.

AVG 7 detecdted Virus Hurri on partition table. How do I remove ?

You will need to fix the master boot record with the Windows XP Recovery Console. To do this, you will need a Windows XP install CD.

Here are the steps to use the recovery console:

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
  4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

In this instance, the correct commands are:

c:\fixmbr
c:\fixboot
The type exit after finishing then remove the Original OS CD.
The machine will reboot properly.

This will fix your boot sector

And All should be well
