Compressor change out 2yr. ago to Copeland #RS64c2E-CAA-959.. using R404A...approx. HP=250psi..LP=10psi..cool down time 24=hr. opened evap. compartment found ice building up of lower drain pan area. Compressor running all the time. door seals good,turned light off

20 years ago guys used to put a 50 watt bulb down in the compressor area BUT the freezers today have been designed with the condenser in the freezer wall and don't retain any heat in the cold weather. Generally what you will experience is the temperature in the surrounding area drops to 10 degrees the freezer goes off and when the area begins to warm up the compressor tries to start with syrup for oil in its crankcase and cycles on its protector until it gets hot enough to warm the oil and allow it to run. Compressor life is shortened and the freezer temp is unstable. A self regulating crankcase heater could be purchased at a local supply house and wrapped around the compressor but I don't know if its ever been tried on a compressor that small or if you might overheat the compressor. ............Can you say garage heater? Its a matter of system design. All of the components for a commercial conversion are out there but a system that small is never considered. Sorry wish I could help more. Fridgidaire freezer warming up


Red light on for High Freezer Temperature Warning
or freezer not cooling, but fridge is and a lot of noise from compressor.
Also, fridge drain hole blocked, water in bottom of fridge.


This is a common fault in Hotpoint Fridge Freezers and can also happen if the door has been left open or has been a power cut.

1. Turn off fridge freezer, or at least turn down the freezer temp to minimum, though not ideal.
2. Open freezer door and remove all drawers.
3. Remove the back panel on the inside of the freezer. This is held in place with 4 screws, which might be 6mm hex head or star allen head. Pull the panel out.
4. Behind where the panel was, there is a cooling element for cooling, pipes, and below this a temperature sensor. If the fridge freezer is not switched off, then fold together a few layers of tinfoil and wrap around the sensor.
5. Use a hairdryer to slowly melt the ice. Melt it around areas where it appears to be hanging on, such as the corners of the cooling element or bolts, as well as any thin sections below the main block of ice around the cooling element, which will be supporting the main block. Use a plastic ice scraper to remove ice but not near pipes or sensor.
Warning: Be careful using electrics around water & melting ice & drips.
6. Below the cooling element, there is a drip channel & drain hole. If this hole is full of ice, pour a small amound of warm water down, leave for 10 seconds and pour a bit more until clear.
In the fridge, clear the drain hole in the same way.
Warning: Do not pour a lot of water down, as this water drains onto a tray above the hot compressor at the rear of the fridge freezer to be evaporated by the heat of the compressor and the tray will only hold a small amount.
7. When all ice is removed, dry all moisture. Put the shelves back. Close door. Turn on fridge freezer. Turn up the freezer temperature to your normal setting. Turn on fast freeze if available. After 1 hour, check with a thermometer. It should be cold enough after 1 or 2 hours.

How lpw of a temp. Can this freezer reach..and and if only 0 degree could the thermostat temp control be changed out so it could reach les than 0 temperatures like negative 20 or so?


There are different models made for holding different products. Yours has a 1/3 hp compressor for above 20 degs. It may have 0 on the thermostat and may well pull down that far, but -20 would be out of it's reach. Where as it's sister model is made to freeze to below zero has a 3/4 hp compressor. Larger compressor for the lower temps.

Kenmore upright freezer quit freezing would work intermitantly and then quit cooling altogether, Approx 10 years old trouble shooting advise or most likely cause would be appreciated

4. Defective overload protector

HAD A TECH. COME OUT AND CHANGE THE FRONT DIGITAL CONTROL PANEL AND THE DOOR SWITCH AND THE FREEZER STILL RUNS APPROX. 20 OF EVERY 24 HOURS EACH DAY


these units are designed to run approx 85 percent of the time,they maintain temp rather than letting it get to a higher temp and then try to cool it down.they use a lot less energy to run the way they do long running times are normal

It seems that the temp more often goes up to 20-30's and that food is not as frozen when I check it. When temp goes up I check it for next couple of minutes and usually within 10 min the temp is back down...


This is normal. All commercfial freezers must defrost 3 to 5 times a day, or they will freeze over at the coil and then stop freezing. A timer in your freezer turns off the compressor and turns a heating element on for 10 to 15 minutes. During that time the coil heats and melts frost from the coil. Usually within 30 minutes the temperature will briefly rise to 20 t0 25 degrees F and then quickly drop down to 0 degrees F. The food rarely defrosts in this short period of time..

Working on a t49 freezer it wont go below 30 , change compressor couple months a go worked fine. Now i change dry and regas with 22oz 404 and wont go down , my high side is 200 my low side is 18 . clean...


Sounds like a restriction to me.
Recover the charge.
Pressurize the system with 350 pounds of nitrogen pressure through the high side.
Leave it pressurized for 15 minutes.
Release the pressure through the low side.
Replace the filter drier again.
Pull a 2 hour vacuum on high and low side.
Recharge liquid refrigerant on the high side.
Let the system sit idle for 30 minutes before starting.
Check the evaporator fan motor as well as the coils. Use a good coil cleaner on the e-coil.

The pressures depend, somewhat, on the expansion device,i.e. a TXV or Cap Tube. Take a pressure reading, then convert it to a temperature. The evap temp should be right at 10 colder than the box temp. Remember, heat flows to cold so the evap has to "Lead the Load" in order to cool. In many cases, the condensing pressure is usually ambient temp, plus 30, then convert to a pressure. These are general accepted practices that have been used for many years.

Errattic temperatures in Freezer


Check out "victory-refrig.com" for manuals, diagrams, etc.
Cap tube systems are "critical charge systems". Can be difficult to get right. You did not mention pressures that you had. The split on the evap vs.box temp is almost always 10 degrees for freezers. If you want a -10 box, your evap needs to be -20. As a general rule of thumb, you want the high side to be "ambient +30". This seems to work most every time. Your problem might be operations related. Them leaving the door open alot and so on. It could also be a problem with the evap fan or the control to it. It could also be that since there had been a problem with the unit, they are now constantly checking it. Could be checking during a defrost cycle. When your box is at 0 degrees, your pressure should be about a -10 and no less that a -15 degree for the evap. You may have to babysit this thing and see how far it will pull down. You may have a weak compressor. Also, I have had many Hobart freezers fail due to dirty condensers. This causes the oil in cap tube systems to gel and clog up the cap tubes. The only fix is replacing the cap tube. There are alot of variables here so be patient, it's not going to be a quick fix. One last thing, since R404A can fractionate, you really need to pull the charge out and weigh in the correct charge with virgin refrigerant. This will eliminate 2 things. 1, it will ensure the correct amount of refrigerant and, 2 no chance of having a poor mixture of refrigerant in the system causing inconsistant readings and performance.
Hope this helps. And remember, cap tube systems are performance measured by the amount of superheat just prior to the unit making temp and cutting off.
