Dell 3100 CN replace drum cartridge

Hi,
I just got an error message asking me to replace the drum cartridge of the printer. It has been printing fine and I don't see a reason why to spend the money for a new cartridge if the old one is still ok.
Since this message occurred the printer refused to print.
Is there any way to reset the error message so that it prints again?

Thanks a lot for your help! replace drum cartridge

I too have the same problem. My 3100cn reports printing only 7000 sheets of A4. Also used up a 4K black cart. in only 700 sheets of moderate printing (5-10% coverage i'd guess). I opened the drum casing and it was full of used toner. I@d like to have some control over the amount of excess toner used - its costing a lot!

I found this posting on a Dell website. It maybe helpful before the chip activates.

Title: Extend drum life
Date: March 25, 2008
ProsIt prints
Consnot very long

Additional ThoughtsAfter the drum "expired" the first time I purchased a small $10 chip on a popular auction site and that brought it back to life. It then "filled up" after several more months. What is that? Well, if you occasionally would empty the excess toner that it picks up off the paper as it flows through the printer you can catch the drum before it "POPs" a small pressure sensor that would immediately stop the printing and say it is "FULL". There are two screws - one on each end of the "nose" of the drum. You will be shocked to see all that comes out.

No. There is no reset as there is with some units. This unit actually knows via a smart chip in the drum unit if it has reached EOL ( end of life ).

you know the old saying, "don't shoot the messenger".

I answered the question because I figured you would like to know definitavely that there is no reset.

I also understand your frustration that you have to purchase a new unit even though this one appears to be printing ok. The reason behind this is simply that Dell does not want you to EVER have a print quality issue, so the warning comes on when the drum is close to end of life so that you have time to procure a new one. Then, after a set amont of print jobs after the warning, the cartridge is disabled.

I guess I could give you an anology. You should change the oil in your car every 3000 miles. Why? you could probably get 4k, 5k, maybe even 10k out of it. It still works, why should you change it?

What you can't see CAN hurt you. Debris in the oil is slowly killing your engine. The Manufacture could set a warning message... "Change oil soon", and then disable the car after another 1k. In fact, if they did... more people would keep from blowing their engines.

The question you posted was "is there any way to reset the error message so that it prints again?" and the correct answer is a definate NO. But you rated the answer as "thanks for trying". Again, please don't shoot the messenger ... and consider the fact that I took the time to address the question. If the answer, even though not what you wanted to hear, correctly answered the post, a "fixya" reply would be appreciated.

    Thanks again.

Very good answer ... but oil change doesn't cost you more then 60% of the new car value... In case of the printer, it will be cheaper to buy new machine than replace the drum and couple color cartridges...

Try replacing the toner cartridge. This seems to be a problem with the photo-sensitive drum, which is located in the cartridge.

There is a known issue for these printers to "streak." If under warranty, call Dell. If not, there is a fix
for the defective drum unit design but requires a little technical expertise.

The procedure is explained here:

The printhead is inside the printer. Hp calls it a scanner. It's the laser that "prints" the info on the drum for printing. Usually a printhead error means that you'll have to get it replaced, not a cheap proposition.

Dell printer

Error code: 004-332

This type of error code implies that you need to restart the printer again. However, do check to see if toner cartridges are seated in the proper position. Also ensure that they have been locked in.
