IBM ThinkPad A21M2628 - won't turn on, although SEEMS like it is

My daughter had this laptop given to her a few years back. It wasn't brand new. Earlier this week she went to log on. The machine powered up and then the screen went blank, and now it flashes, looks like lightning, kind of. Nothing shows on the screen, though. Just flashes of light that last a second or perhaps even less. You can also hear the machine sounding like it will start but it just keeps going through the same sounds again and again. Then, you can't turn it off. She has to take let the power run out to shut it off. Seems like it has a mind of its own.

What do you think? A battery is necesary? Searching batteries, it seems they can cost as much as a new computer!? Any help much appreciated!

Well, the computer will stay on for 10 minutes, monitor working, everything seeming fine. Then it shuts down, but won't shut off, making all sorts of noises. I believe it may be the battery, since it won't stay on without being plugged in. I am thinking that it is not the monitor, since the monitor works fine, as long as the computer works. Thanks for both your responses. Sounds like I need a new laptop!

It could be a number of problems with the machine. The RAM could be faulty, power supply, HDD, motherboard etc

Unless you have the time, patience and parts, I wouldn't see that it is worth the hassle of trying to get the machine running.

I don't want to seem unhelpful, its just laptops are so cheap these days and also your daughter seems to have had some good use out of this one, it is probably worth replacing it now.

If your daughter has data stored on the computer, it is easy (if the HDD is not damaged) to recover it quite cheaply. You can buy a 2.5" Disk caddy, take the HDD out of the laptop and put it into the caddy. This will then turn the disk into an external drive and you should be able to retrieve the data of it.

Anyway, if you would like any further information, don't hesitate to contact me.

I think its probably just a display problem.. Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor and see if it works alright.. If it does then you will just have to replace the LCD screen.. let me know what happened so that we can follow up on this..

I had a customer's a22m Thinkpad doing exactly this today. It's definitely not the display as hooking it to a secondary monitor didn't fix anything. It appears to be a motherboard issue.

IBM Thinkpad t43p bios password

The solution is different for each model, so if it's not on the list it probably won't work. IBM bios issues usually involve motherboard replacements or the epprom needs to be changed in order to access it. If the person who gave it to you, is there a chance you can get the information? you can try ebay, there are sellers who claim they can resolve the problem.

My thinkpad t61p is not booting/no video. Giving 3 beeps, 1 long and 2 short beeps.

1 long, 2 short is an error with the video adapter. This isn't specific to IBM systems either, that code is the same for pretty much every BIOS out there.
It seems your video card may be at fault. has anything changed? do you have any picture on the display at all? If you have zero picture it will be hard to get into safe mode and try to roll back drivers etc. It may be that the video adapter is just defective. You can contact IBM/Lenova and see about getting a replacment or you can take it into an authorized repair place. You can also attempt to obtain a replacement video adapter for the T61 and install it yoursel fif you have the knowhow
Hope this helps Good luck!

The display screen has turned black

When you connected the external monitor thto the laptop did it display?

If so then you have to reset the monitor port. Hold down the function key and find the FKEY that shows a picture of a monitor. Press that until you get the laptop screen back.

Typical use is:
  • 1 press = external monitor
  • 2 presses = laptop and dual monitor
  • 3 presses = just the laptop screen

Glad to see you found your cable. The inverter would be my best guess, then possibly the back light, but more than likely the inverter.
