The front passanger side door will not open from either the inside or the outside does anyone know why this is and what can be done to fix it, i.e is it an easy d.i.y and if so how, or will it have to be taken to a dealship to be delt wif and if so what coasts could be involved
Just bought a 1999 Golf, Front passenger door just doesn't open, I hear it is just a small plastic clip instead that snapped in the cold weather (Alberta), and I can hear a small rattling inside the door if I go over a bump at speed.

I was working on my 1996 toyota corolla and my rear door wouldn't open from inside or outside..Remember that mine was electric power door locks I cut mykey switch on and came around and door opened from outside handle.. you have to take off the door panel and look. most often the linkage comes off of the outside handle; sometimes something is broken. It will be a mystery no more when you remove the door panel and look.
Try a slim jim first, down the side of the window. Or AAA or locksmith. If no luck, remove the seat first. Find the screws and bolts around the door handle and arm rest. Most Ford's have screws around the outer side of the panel. I don't believe your's does. The panel lifts or pops off. Once the panel is off, you can reach down and open the door. Just a note. I have done some to where the panel came out in pieces.

this is a common problem with VW door handles, but an easy fix!!! The door handle needs to be replaced as the fork that lifts the lock has broken off or cracked. Depending on the model it is easy to remove the door handle. spring off the Crome mld on the front and on the slam side of the door behind the rubber u will find a phillips screw. Under the crome mld is the other.

My 1998 passat done the same, try remove the drivers side window/childlock control on the armrest and clean the multipoint switch as that got my drivers side door opening/closing on the fob as well as the passenger rear door unlocking and working again as it was deadbolted and would not open inside or out.
Yes, it seems VAG haven't got the hang of making a decent door handle / latch system!
If it opens from the inside ok then it will be the linkage from the outer handle to the latch that has come away. Usually they just fall out of the clip and can be pushed back into place but in cold weather the plastics get a little brittle and snap.
Once the inner trim is off, look inside the door shell, it should be fairly obvious when you see it.
