Power problems I am working on a Dell Inspiron 8000, Mod#PP01X. The AC adaptor will fail after several minutes of use. I replaced the AC adaptor w/ original Dell PA-1900-05D power adaptor and problem started again with new adaptor after only 15 minutes. Complete power failure and system shuts down.

I am still having problems after replacing the battery. But I did notice the fans in the back are not rotating. So I hope this fixes the problem.

Your power supply connection at the mobo is shutting pc down because of a overload.Either heat related or processor damage has occurred, or both.Replace the processor to check for initial solution.Monitor system fans and any obstruction that could prevent cooling through the vents.Fan "on" when PC is turned on is 2nd in steps to fixing this.3rd.Virus can instruct and corrupt operating system into shutting down.Memory is unlikely here.Keep me posted and updated.................................. :)

Using a multimeter you can test the output of the AC adapter. I usually use a paper clip in my multimeter probe can't fit into the center of the AC adapter plug. The output voltage will be written on the AC adapter and will probably be something like 12 or 16 Volts DC. It can and will fluctuate within +/- .5V and that's OK. While you are testing it shake the AC adapter around and wiggle the cable to test for any breaks or faults. If the AC adapter tests OK then turn your attention to the notebook.

Test the notebook with the AC adapter only by removing the battery. If this works then you should suspect your battery as the culprit. A bad battery can cause havoc with a notebook even if the AC adapter is OK. If the same problems happen without the battery then your problem is most likely motherboard based. I would make sure to remove as many components as possible like the DVD drive, extra RAM, USB devices, add in card, to eliminate them as the source of the problem and then test the machine is this minimum state. I would also test the system fully with the diagnostics that are on the drivers CD that came with your system by booting to the drivers CD. Even if the system tests OK in the diagnostics it doesn't mean your system is OK though. A replacement motherboard can usually be found on eBay or purchased from Dell directly if your system is no longer under warranty.

Jaime867 is correct in suspenting heat as a possible problem, blow out the fan ducts with some compress air and feel for air movement. The Dell diagnostics from the drivers CD can also test your fans.

The fans are temperature controlled and will only spin if needed. The best way to test your fans in the run the dianostics found on the drivers CD that came with your notebook.

I would suggest to check the cooling fans inside the PC. If the microprocessor fan is not working properly that will cause overheating and the system will shutdown to avoid further damage.

You will want to replace/ get those fans replaced right away. You can cause alot of damage. It is shutting off because It is getting way too hot.
You most likely will want to have it serviced for that.
    Keep me posted,
    Lee

When you received the system as out of the box and you get this message "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determind" let the Dell tech service know that they sent you a wrong or incorrect type of AC Adapter.
If this message not was not appearing before it just happened recently try to download and install the latest BIOS version from the support site.
If all fails remove the batt and check if laptop can work with AC adapter alone, because issues like AC not determine may not charge the battery and laptop may not work with AC as well, maybe laptop is already running on battery power.

Laptop won't staart up.

Hi,
Yes, it should run off AC power even if the battery is removed. Sounds like either the motherboard or your AC adaptor might be failing. I would start by trying the AC adaptor with another dell to verify it it's not dead.

Good luck,
Raf

This should have a "battery check" button on the battery itself. Remove the battery and press the button. If it reveals that the battery is not fully charged, or you cannot get it to take full charge, perhaps all that you need is a new battery. If the battery is failing the check the system makes on it at boot, it won't.

On the long term, a power adapter with a bigger amperage can damage battery and battery charger.

Better to get an adapter with same specs as the 65/70W one , or an original replacemant:

the very first thing that u can try is that try with the different ac adaptor and the battery if u have and if it doesnt the same thing then definately u have to replace the motherboard and if the other ac adaptor and the battery works then replace the ac adaptor and the battery but what i suggest u is that u should replace the ac adaptor and the motherboard both at a time and it will be fine and for that u dont have to worry about ur data in the computer cause replacing the motherboard will bot loose ur data.......

Laptop won't turn on

The blinking orange battery light generally indicates that the battery isn't working properly, usually going out and not charging properly. In this case, since the adapter will not power the machine without the battery, and it should, I'm going to say that the adapter is going out and not getting the proper amount of power to the system. Try replacing the adapter. Be sure to replace it with a Dell replacement, the Targus brand universal adapters do not work well with Dell machines, and in most cases won't work at all.
