Atrk means that the unit is in auto-tracking mode and trying to lock in to the tape's recorded speed. This should go away after a short period of time once the tape has started.

When inserting vhs tape, the player pulls the tape from inserted vhs

That is exactly what a typical M-Load mechanism is supposed to do. Once the VHS tape cassette is inserted, cassette housing cover will be flipped up and two arms will pull tape out of cassette housing to wrap tape around cylindrical spinning head housing that contains video heads and, if VHS HI-FI, audio heads as well. When stop or eject button is pressed, arms will retract and tape will wind back into cassette housing. What type of problem are you experiencing with unit? It may have nothing to do with M-load engaging tape around head cylinder.

Are the SD-V296 and the SD-V296KU the same. My instructions on the KU does not say you can copy from VHS to DVD. Reviews I have read says the SD-V296 does copy from VHS to DVD.

Neither of these units can record to DVD; they are DVD players. I believe they are the same unit (the extra letters indicate a region code for the player).

The manual for the SD-V296KU is available from Toshiba here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=2805081&rpn=undefined&modelFilter=SD-V296KU&selCategory=2797338&selFamily=2797344 .

I hope this helps.

I've had a DR-MV5S DVD video recorder & video cassette recorder for years to transfer DVD over to VHS tapes. Something has recently happened where I can't record VHS tapes. Can't play VHS tapes on the...

If it won't PLAY VHS tapes it must have a serious mechanical problem (if it even loads) or its heads are glommed up, so it obviously won't record them either. When's the last time you ran a cleaning tape through it?

Solve the load or playback problem and it will probably record.

Time and poor storage conditions are the mortal enemies of tapes. Store the in a 'played

Hi,
There is an recall from Toshiba for "bad" problem in Toshiba SD-3980 dvd player.

"Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit. If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit."

Click Toshiba Support link for original message, please contact Toshiba and above number for replacement unit.
Hope these info will help you.

Will not dub from VHS to DVD. I am getting an error message that says I have made a change with my video source.

You didn't give us a model number, always include this since it can have a big influence on the value of any response.
Missing this, we have to assume that you have a DVD player "Toshiba DVD Players"
This is how your message is labeled.
If this is the case, you never will record a DVD, only to VHS tapes.
