Firstly, you have to know that part or even all of your original pictures, music files and all other files may be rewritten by all your re-installed Windows files and gone permanently. So, you should prepare for disappointment.
In fact, after the deleting or initializing process, the deleted data on a computer drive is not actually erased immediately. It is still there and only become invisible and inaccessible. But, it is also so vulnerable that it can be easily overwritten by anything new on this same drive. So, that's why you should prepare for disappointment.
But, you still can try to use a PC data recovery freeware to restore your wanted data as much as possible:

Next time, I hope you can learn a lesson to back up everything important well before you decide to re-install your Windows.

Chkdsk shows "one or more unrecoverable problems". Now what do I do?

You should run chkdsk /r which is the repair and it will repair the problems. Once you reboot and if you still have problems:
Insert your Windows XP Home Operating System in the CD drive and boot from it. When the screen comes up showing you the options Select to INSTALL WINDOWS. After you hit F8 to accept the license agreement, windows will go and search your drive to see if there is a version of windows already installed. When it finds your Xp Home already installed SELECT THE OPTION TO REPAIR. This will cause all your data, documents, music, pictures, videos and programs to be saved and not removed. You won't lose anything.

Crash windows xp

If the crash happens constantly you'll need a windows xp operating system disk then insert it into the CD Drive, click to Install and after you press F8 to accept the license agreement the system will search for any already existing windows xp operating sytems that are installed. If it finds your select R to repair the current operating system, this will preserve your documents, music, pictures, videos and programs.

I have an IBM ThinkPad 2861that displays "operating system not found" during start up. I downloaded a user manual that wasn't much help in solving the problem. Any advice?

message means there is no working operating system(OS) installed on the harddisk, like windows XP,vista or a lunix version. if you have a working cd-rom, i use a win 98 install cd that boots from startup then install win98 to find out if there are any hardware issues. if the invalid OS was a version that used the NTFS file system the drive will have to be re-formatted/erased to install win98. if you have a bootable cd-rom version of the OS you use or if the factory IBM restore partition is intact you can use them. they may not save any data you have on the drive. if you have data you need to retrive from the disk drive it is a different procedure.

If windows vista fails on a laptop is it still possible to retrieve file, if so how is this done? Thanks!

You can do a couple things to try recovering your data. The first thing you can try is a repair install of the OS. To do this, you put in your OS disk, boot to the CDROM (it should automatically do it). Once it is in let the installation go until it detects a previous installation. After this it will ask if you want to run a repair installation, to which you say yes.

If this doesn't work or you don't want to try this step, you can remove the hard drive and install it into an external hard drive kit you can purchase from best buy. Make sure you buy the kit without the hard drive already in it! The kit will have instructions on how to install the hard drive. But it is very straight forward.

If you do not feel comfortable doing these steps I recommend you consult a local tech for assistance.

In short, yes it absolutely is possible to recover your information.

Good Luck,

Windows failed to load

There are a couple of ways to do this one of which is putting the laptop hard drive into an external drive enclosure and plugging it into another machine, the other is to create a UBCD4WIN boot disc to back up the data (this requires a little time to setup and you must have a Windows system disc (not a restore disc) to accomplish the CD creation).
