Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

WINDOWS XP Freezes

Hi, Whenever I open up either my Pictures or My Music in Windows XP Home (only these folders) everything works fine but whenever I close down any of these windows after doiing any task with any of the files from within them (ie: previewing a picture, right clicking on a picture etc) the computer freezes. The only way to get it back is to open ctr panel and log off the use twice.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have defraged the syetem, checked for viruses - even tried a clean reinstall. With the reinstall everything was ok until windows did its updates?? - don't know which of the 108 is the problem however)

Spec of laptop seems ok:AMD Turion 64 1.79ghz, 1 GB Ram

Thanks in advance.

It is happening with all the pictures that you on your computer?
Is it also happening with the default pictures that is on the computer?

What kind of file is that? Is it imported from your camera or downloaded from any particular website? What is the extension of the file?

If the file is imported from any camera then look for a codec on their webistes.

Can you list the non-microsoft software that is installed on the computer(Get help from add /remove programs)

Autorun.inf open error in flash drive

open My Computer, and right click on "explore" to get your files. Then install a good anti-virus program, such as Avast! Anti-virus (avast.com) and clean off your (possibly) infected hard drive and computer.

I have a problem with my computer. whenever i open any folder in any drive, the search window opens. what should i do in order to solve this?

This type of problem normally occurs because some virus called ‘PET32.exe’ , or it can also occur due some other virus which disrupt the windows registry.

. Open Start >> Run or press Window Key + r , this will open the run prompt.

2. Type “regedit” ( without quotes )and press Enter.
3. Navigate to key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

4. Double the registry key named Default and set the value to none.

This will restore the normal windows explorer behavior of opening a folder when you double click a folder rather than opening windows search.

If search opens when you double click on any windows drive, then try this

1. Open Start >> Run or press Window key + r
2. Type “regsvr32 /i shell32.dll” ( without quotes )and press Enter

After the command run successfully, you will see a message saying DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in Shell32.dll succeeded.

I hope this will help to fix the trouble.

Windows Freezing

Do you have Sp1 installed ? i am assuming you are using windows vista. If not i suggest you download this. if its Xp install SP1 and SP2. In Windows vista there is a problems and reporting app located in the control panel, open it up and see if you problem is there , if it is then there should be an option to find a solution, Try that option.

Also veryify that the systems are fully updated.

Dont rule out a virus or worm yet. the problem you are describing does seem to be this which can infect other system providing you copied the pics to them. Back up the pictures to anoter folder and empty the my pictures folder. save a picture from the internet to it and try right clicking then. If this works then copy back the images one by one to the my pictures folder m everytime right clicking to see if it freezes. Eventually you will find the offending image. you can also try Super Anti Spyware Remover or tuneup utilities and let it do a registery scan.

Let me know what happens

Windows XP Freezing

Hi, Thank you for your reply. I answer to your questions:

1. No, I have not recently installed new RAM
2. I have just made my laptop freeze so I could check the event viewer to see if anything came up - butno error is reported in the system, application or security logs. (PS: to cause the freeze I opened up My Pictures, right clicked on and image, clicked open. The image opened in picture viewer. I closed picture view without any problems but once I closed the My Pics folder the computer froze.)

Thanks
