When camera is turned on memory card is write protected shows on the screen. The unlock is up on the disk. Have gone to mode to the settings, have pulled out card and set up camera memory ok, then put card in and format card is on setting put camera won't let me go to it, it goes from Language (going up to Auto off) it skips format card. Have tried going to a picture ( button to the right of mode, then going to memu, tried to go down to protect but yellow arrow won't move off of slide show. Have bought a new disk, it still doesn't work. Have gone to 3 camera stores noone has been able to help. This is on a Nikon Coolpix S51. Have followed the directions in the mamual, nothing has worked. Is the camera bad? or how do I fix this problem?

Same problem exactly! Nikon returned my camera to me UNFIXED...saying warrantee was invalid due to the scratch on outside of camera! Excellent customer service...don't you think?

Never buy a Nikon product again. I had this problem...it took almost 2 MONTHS to get my camera back (would have been longer if I had not gone to Toronto to pick it up myself).
All that was done was "sensor replaced" and "cleaned contacts".
Almost 2 months to replace a sensor..what absolutely terrible service.
I live in the Northwest Territories and sent it to BC. After one month they said they were swamped and sent it to the Mississauga(Toronto) location. Pathetic service from a company that definitely has lost ALL MY FUTURE BUSINESS.

I have the same problem and it happened in the middle of a day full of taking photos. I tried book procedures and the CARD itself lock mechanism is definitely in the unlock position. All this to no avail. Has anyone uncovered a solution without throwing the camera off the 12th floor?

You need to unlock the card itself. Take it out and look for a tab on the left. It should be pushed up.

My nikon coolpix digital camera s51c say memory card is write protected... and will not let me go to format card... what do i do... pls help

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

I have a nikon coolpix and says memory is write proteted how can i get it to work with out this?

Take a look at the memory card. SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

My camera is saying that my card cannot be used ( sd card) I erased the pictures on it and still it comes up with that. last time I used my camera it worked fine. What do i do?

Try formatting the card in the camera using the camera's format feature located in its menus. If offered "low level" format, select it. Note that this will also totally erase the card, so do this only after you're certain that all needed photos have been backed up to your computer.

MY MEMORY CARD IS WRITE PROTECED MY CAMERA WONT WORK

Remove the memory card from the camera. On the side of the card, there is a tiny button. Push it to the other side of the tiny groove on which it sits. Voila your card is no more write protected. If you are still lost, let me know.
