Yes. As Rahul said it seems its a problem with the sound card by itself. You should make sure the driver for the sound card is installed correctly.
Go to Device manager and check for the Sound, Video and game controllers.. If you could see any audio device listed there then right click and try to update the driver (This will check for the proper drivers and installed in through windows update).
If you couldnt see the device itself then look of Other devices where you might see the sound device listed.
Go to your computer manufacturer website and install the driver for your sound card
Right Click, My Computer icon, click Manage, a window opens up, called Computer Management window. click Device Manager, and check on the right hand side of the window if there is any yellow exclamation mark, or a red X.
