Can't burn CD's anymore!

Have you tried replacing the CDrw drive? It sounds like the write mechanism in it is toast. You can find a replacement drive on ebay. Just put in your laptop's model and say something like "HP DV1000 cdrw drive". Or you can purchase an external drive that plugs into your usb ports on ebay or at

Okay, i know that this is a common problem for several years...when i try to burn a disc in itunes, it "checks playlist", and prepares to burn, but then cancels burn and gives me this error...

> this drive worked for about four months
> I cannot burn a disc ... even with other programs.

It must have "failed".

The "good" news is that it probably can be replaced, under WARRANTY.
Take it back to where you purchased it, and they will replace it, under WARRANTY.

> could not recognize the drive

The drive has several major components:
* the electronics that tell the computer that it exists, and is CD-ROM or CD-RW or DVD-writer,
* the laser that heats the surface of the media, to "burn" onto the media

In the first case, the electronics failed. In your current case, the laser has failed.

I have two identical drives that are "successfully" burning unreadable DVDs. At the end of burning it says "writing lead in". When they used to work properly, it said "writing...

It sounds like somehow instead of burning a DVD to view in a typical DVD player, you are burning a DVD Data disc. This would account for the lack of a Table of Contents (it is possible to burn a DVD without a Table of Contents but from you post it sounds like you have that feature enabled). Verify what option you are choosing from your software package (Roxio, Nero etc) that you are in fact burning a Video DVD. You may also want to check off the "verify prior to burning" option to prevent making more "coasters". Since you are experiencing the same problem on both drives, it's hardly unlikely that it is a hardware problem. Best of luck!

I'm trying to install dvd burning software but it is complaing "cannot install with this dvd drive" What's wrong? I got the software through a product (dvd drive)

I think you have got the dvd burning software when you bought a dvd drive. There are few dvd drive which gives this type of software for free. But this software can installed by that dvd drives. And later dvd burning can be done in that dvd drive only.
