SOURCE: Internet Connectivity

For some reason your laptop isn't resolving DHCP (in real terms, it's either asking for a network address and getting no reply, or getting a reply it can't understand).

There are a couple of ways to go about solving it.

- try turning any security or encryption the wireless router is using off. If you can connect without security, the problem is in the security settings, not the hardware.

- Check for the router setting called "DHCP server enabled". This should be set to ON. Your router manual will tell you where this may be found. If it's not set to ON then the router won't talk to your network card.

- If these things fail, make sure your computer is running DHCP and asking correctly. To do this, go into Control Panel, Computer Management and look in the Services list for DHCP. If this service is disabled, enable it. If it seems okay, click on it and select "Restart the service" Try again when the service has been restarted.

Hi Martin,
with all what you say, it looks like that your hardware is ok. That's a good start.
There are several possibilities what can be wrong: either your modem is not configured correctly, or some of the setting in your computer are not right.
Let's start with the computer:
1. open a command prompt (WindowsKey+R), type "cmd" and hit "Enter".
2. In the following window type "ipconfig /all" (there is a space before the "/").
3. Your output should look similar to mine:

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.xxx
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Friday, August 07, 2009 17:32:33
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, August 08, 2009 17:32:33

Since the default IP address of your modem is 192.168.2.1, you IP address has to be in that range: 192.168.2.2-254.
If your IP address starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx or is 0.0.0.0, you have a connectivity problem. (Let me know and post your output here, if that's the case.)

Now type in that command prompt "ping 192.168.2.1" and hit "Enter" - replace the numbers with what you see under your Default Gateway.
My result looks like this:

Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.2.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

This shows that you can connect to your modem. If you get a "Request timed out." reply, then your computer can not connect to your modem. Also, let me know if that's the case.

Now go back to the command prompt and type "ping www.google.com" and hit "Enter". My result looks like this:

Pinging www.l.google.com [74.125.65.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 74.125.65.99: bytes=32 time=87ms TTL=50
Reply from 74.125.65.99: bytes=32 time=85ms TTL=50
Reply from 74.125.65.99: bytes=32 time=87ms TTL=50
Reply from 74.125.65.99: bytes=32 time=87ms TTL=50

Ping statistics for 74.125.65.99:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 85ms, Maximum = 87ms, Average = 86ms

This shows two things:

  1. You can get to the outside world
  2. DNS is working properly
Now copy the IP address returned by this command (74.125.65.99 in my case) and copy it into the URL bar of your browser. If google shows up, then you have a DNS problem. What that means is that the translation from web addresses (www.google.com) to IP address (74.125.65.99) is not working. Go back and check you entry for DNS servers in ipconfig / all. Is that number identical to your Default Gateway?

How to set up DNS manually:

  1. Click on start
  2. Go to control panel
  3. If your control panel is in classic view click on Network Connections
  4. Right click on your Wireless network icon
  5. Click Properties
  6. Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
  7. Click on the Properties button
  8. Now select the following option: "Use the following DNS server address"
  9. Under "Preferred DNS server address" enter 208.67.222.222
  10. Under "Alternate DNS address" enter 208.67.220.220
  11. Click on OK until all windows are closed
Some points on your modem:
  1. If you don't have a manual, you can get it here.
  2. Make sure you have entered your user credentials for Bell (see page 11 in the manual)
Ok - sorry for the long post, but I tried to catch all culprits. If there is anything you don' t understand or it is still not working, let me know - I'm happy to help. If the outputs form the command prompt look very different from mine, copy them and post them here.

Easy way to do that? - Go back to your command prompt.
  1. Type ipconfig /all > C: ixya.txt (hit ENTER)
  2. Type ping 192.168.2.1 >> C: ixya.txt (hit ENTER)
  3. Type ping www.google.com >> C: ixya.txt (hit ENTER)
  4. Open My Computer, go to your C: drive and you will find a text file called fixya or fixya.txt, which contains all the information.
  5. Come back here and paste the information in a comment.
Let me know if this was helpful and what you found out!

SOURCE: Trendnet router will not give a wireless signal,

1.Log into router. Using either 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 in a browser window that is ( internet Explorer or Firefox)
2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) ( router status window)
3.Note router name you are connecting to.
4.. Check the laptop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses.
5. Set the laptop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. This set up in the "security tab" in the router. using 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 to access through a browser.
6.Note router name you are connecting to.
7. Move the laptop/desktop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet.
This is for all routers to set up wirelessly.
8. check for firmware update at the manufacturers site for your model router
9. cell phones, cordless phones, digital TV's, can affect the data signal from a router. Also distance from the router can be a factor. If your router is in a basement place the router to a upper floor and center it in the room.

How do I set up a secure password?

For trendnet

Your Trendnet wireless router lets you broadcast your home network across your entire house, so you can access the Internet in any room. This signal may be powerful enough to extend into neighbors' houses, where they could easily jump on the network if it is unsecured. To protect your network, set up Wireless Encryption Protocol, or WEP, to encrypt data and prevent access unless the user enters the correct password.

Type "http://192.168.0.1" in your Internet browser's address bar and press "Enter." Enter "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank. Click "Log In" to log into your Trendnet wireless router's administrative program. Click "Wireless" from the left pane of the "Basic" tab. Click "WEP" under the "Wireless Security Mode" section at the bottom of the screen. Enter your preferred password for the network. A strong password is made up of a random selection of numbers and letters. Click "Save Settings" at the top of the screen to save your WEP settings.

Laptop died and now I cant connect my desktop with the belkin usb adapter. It just keeps saying aquiring network address.

Use the Ethernet cable to verify the router or modem is working and connects to the Internet. If so, then check your wireless adapter in the desk top through device manager - it should detect the Belkin. Also, verify you are entering the correct WEP keys to access the wireless connection to the router or modem - sometimes it gets typed in wrong.

No SOftware Driver for TEW-432BRP

What brand is your router? Check for the IP address of the router and default password (should be written on the back of the device). Then type the IP address into the web browser on your main desctop in the kitchen like that for example http://192.168.0.1 enter the default username and pasword and you are in the router's menu.
Set up wireless connection SSID is the name of your network that will apear when you search it, do not change any of the default settings exept the SSID , enable, and select password. Use the WPA2 and type in your desired password and press SAVE . Then go to your bedroom and try to find the wireless network you've just created. And connect. Good Luck

Cannot aquire ip address from wireless router

Hi, If your newer usb wireless adaptor does not have the same settings as your router this is the problem you have. First make sure you have installed the cd software that came with the usb adaptor without it plugged in. After that is complete make sure the wireless adaptor is seen by the computer it is attached to. Then you need to open the settings of the usb adaptor and set it up same as your router's settings. This includes the WEP security password if you use it. Good Luck.

I cant connect my new laptop to my Tew 432 brp trendnet router

Sounds like you may be having an issue with software already installed on the laptop to control the wireless connection. Many laptops have preinstalled software for their internal wireless devices. You should consult your manual about configuring and saving passwords for a network for that particular device. Typically you will need to enter the WEP key in the software itself.

Can't connect to internet

It sounds like the driver for the USB network device is not loaded correctly. So, you'll need to reinstall it from scratch. Unplug everything, install the software, then reattach the usb cable to the PC.

The other thing is, did you DISABLE the network adapter that was already in your PC when you added the USB network adapter? If not, you need to do that. If they are both active but only one is connected, the system could still be trying to use the other network adapter and tying up the resources in the process.
