Question about Jacuzzi MAGNUM FORCE POOL PUMP 2 HP 115230V 94027120

1 Answer

Installed new impeller, seal, o ring and square o ring in Jacuzzi Magnum 2 hp. After putting it all back together it leaks alot from around the housing. The o ring is new, and I have tightened as tight as I can. I'm wondering if the O ring is to large, not allowing the housing to seat properly...or if there is some other reason it might be leaking. I see no cracks in the housing or other parts.

The o ring usually would not fit if it were the wrong size. What seals is a ceramic seal, did you change that? If run without water, the ceramic seal will be damaged....

I have found the problem even before turning on the motor. When I put some water in the pump for prime, the water starts leaking out immediately around the bottom of the housing...almost like there is no o ring at all. And yes, if you are referring to the ceramic seal that is part of the shaft seal I did replace that.

Wondering if you ever solved your problem as I have the same one right now. Do you have tabs on the motor that fit into slots on the pump housing when you put the two together? I do. I feel like the tabs aren't going far enough into the slots (about 1/4 to 1/2" of each tab is not in the slot). When I put the ring lock on it gets stuck/tough to complete the lock about 1/2 way. I wonder if that is normal or if it is because the motor is not in the housing completely? Maybe that is preventing a complete seal even if the O-ring is good. FYI, my pump connects to the motor without bolts (volute to diffuser inside housing).

Where is it leaking? if it is still leaking between the wet end which is the black plastic water housing and the motor then the seal is not properly set.

How to change the seals on a jacuzzi magnun force 1 hp pool pump

Hi,
If you haven't already figured out how to change the seals on your Jacuzzi Magnum Force pump, I can help by supplying a diagram.
Here is the parts explosion for that pump.
Start by removing the case/basket assembly, then the diffuser to get to the impeller. Loosen the impeller to get to the seal plate.
When going to the trouble of changing the shaft seals one should change all the hosing seals at the same time because its a lot of work.

I have a 1 1/2 HP Magnum Force Pump by Jacuzzi. After making some strange grinding noise, I opened it up to find lots of white powdery material flaking off where the Seal Housing (#18) meets the motor...

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Yes, the seal has been leaking and it needs to be replaced; probably the motor bearings too.

Removing the impeller requires you lock the shaft as you turn the impeller off counter-clockwise. To lock the impeller you will have to remove the motor end cover or a cap covering the shaft end depending on which version your particular motor has. Look at the end opposite the pump and imagine a shaft from one end to the other right in the center.

Once you remove the cover you will see a slot for a screwdriver, a flat for a wrench, a hex hole for a hex key or some combination of these. Lock the shaft and spin off the impeller. Some are so tight you will end up breaking them in the process. Simply replace it and the seal. Be sure the motor shaft is in good enough condition to allow the new seal to work properly. If too much shaft material has rotted away the new seal will leak soon after it is installed; you would need a new motor at that point.

Change pump seal

Frank,
I could not find a manual to refer you to as jacuzzi is very proprietary with their products, they want you to pay their techs for help. I will do my best to walk you through it using the parts diagram here: http://www.poolinspections.com/manuals/pumps/jacuzzi_magnum.pdf

Disconnect power
remove pump mounting nut
seperate motor from pump
remove the diffuser which is on top of the imeller
now remove the end cap at the rear of the motor (should be 2 1/4" hex screws)
this should expose the back end of the motor shaft.
find an open ended wrench to secure the end of the motor shaft we just exposed (typically is a 7/16" wrench)
*if this unit has a center screw securing the impeller to the other end of the shaft, unscrew this by turning CLOCKWISE (this would be a reverse thread screw)
next while locking onto the end of the motor shaft with the open ended wrench, spin the impeller counter clockwise until removed. This is where you will find the shaft seal. pay attention to how it is installed.
remove shaft seal
install new shaft seal
reassemble.
Note: it is highly recommended to secure new orings while replacing this seal (unless its new)
if you attempt this and one of the o-rings has deteriorated, it will not fit back together properly.

I have water leaking from the bottom of the ring lock.Took it apart don't see rubber o-ring.Is a rubber o-ring normally installed around the outside of the impellar housing? If so do you know the part...

You should just have a "O" ring on the difuser about a 2" ring at the center opening and one about the size you describe on the seal plate or in the pump housing. Ether one at the outer edge. You probally have a bad seal. You will need to remove the impeller and replace this before you put the pump back together. Generally if you pull the wires and take the pump to the poll store they will do this for you for the price of parts and can match your "O" ring's to the pump at the same time. This is always your best bet once you open the pump to get all this done at the same time. Good luck.

How to disassemble a magnum 1500 - to change the bearing seal.

On the big lock ring there is a small clip that you pull out away from the ring then turn out of the way. It is just a peg to stop the ring from turning, with that done from the back of the pump loosten the ring in a counter clockwise direction. With the ring clear start the pump for just a second a couple of times till the water pressure pops the pump in two. Once that is done I beleve it has five screws holding the difuser on, pull that and on most models their is a center screw on the impeller. This screw is a left hand thread so turn it clockwise to loosten it. Then insert something flat and strong in a vain of the impeller on the left side and give it a sharp hit to start the impeller spinning off. If need be spin the rest of the way off and your at the seal. Rember when putting this back together Hand tight only on the impeller and use a teflon or silicone base lube not petroleium jelly.

I have a jacuzzi magnum 1500 pool pump which leaks. I changed the O-ring and it still leaks. If I have to change the seal on it, how do I change it. I tried undoing everything on this pump. Thanks!

You need a 201 seal for the pump. Most electric motor shops that work on pumps and of course pool store carry these. If you are unfamiliar with how to change the seal, the charges to have it done are usually low. We charge $15 - $30 depending on how much of the pump is brought in and therefore remains to be taken apart to replace the seal. The seal is about a $5 item.

If trying yourself, you will need to completely disassemble the pump, lock the motor shaft at the rear of the unit, spin off the impeller, and replace both halfs of the seal.

Pump does not turn on except for a humming sound and shuts off jumping the electric breaker

This could be anything from a stuck impeller to bad windings in motor. If you open the pump at the lock ring and remove the difusser from the impeller you can see if you can spin the impeller, If it won't move is it something holding the impeller up remove it. If notit is probally a bad bearing and you should replace the motor. If the Impeller turns try turning it on and caerfully try to spin before it kicks the breaker. If it is sort of stuck and does not want to turn the motor is bad and needs to be replaced. If it spins and won't start same thing, If it spins and starts it is probally a start capicator. Shut the power off at the breaker remove the back of the motor the capacitor will be a small black or silver cylinder with 2 or 3 wires clipped to it. Remove this and take it to a motor shop and get an exact duplicate. and that should fix it. When putting back together be sure to lube all "O"rings and refill with water. Hope this helps.
