Need to open cd device

Try this; if the button on the front of the CD drive won't work, and Windows won't eject the CD, look for a tiny hole on the front of the CD drive. It should be somewhere near the eject button. Take a paper clip and unfold it; the end of the paperclip should just fit into the hole in the CD drive's faceplate. Press in gently and this should eject the CD. You may need to do this during a reboot of the computer (you could also try holding the eject button as the computer is rebooting).

The ejection button does not work.

Take a paper clip unfold it and you can manually eject what you have in there by inserting it into the tiny hole by the eject button...I won't solve the problem but if your favorite cd/dvd is stuck...that will get it out.

I have bought by mail order an IBM Think Pad reconditioned. It does have a users manual and I cannot work out how to use the DVD drive. In fact no drive seems to be loaded. What do I do under these...

Did you get a complete set of IBM "System Recovery" CDs/DVDs?
If so, then reinstall Microsoft Windows, which will install all the IBM-provided software to support the DVD drive.

If you did not get those CDs/DVDs, you will need to contact IBM/Lenovo, and for about $60 (shipping included), obtain a replacement set.

Think pad doesn't recognize the dvd player

Is it the dvd player that originally came installed in the laptop? If so, then the drive is dead and will need to be replaced. The cost on a drive for a think pad is generally around $200, but I'm sure there are places to get one cheaper. If you are not willing to spend that kind of money, you can purchase an external usb optical drive for around $60 - $80. Possibly even less than that, depending on brand and location.
