Modems are for dial up connections not network connections you need a network interface card (nic) or a wireless card so if you are using a modem to connect to the router that will not work. period. and if you are not connected to a modem then of course it will not work ... I cant really understand what you are trying to get to with this you have a router and your computer will not connect? we need more info to help on this please

I'm having trouble connecting my emachine to a cable modem.

Turn off the computer before you begin making connections. Make sure the cable modem is up and running with your service before you attempt to make the computer connection.

  • 2 Connect the coaxial cable from the wall outlet into the back of the cable modem where it is marked "Cable" and has the male coaxial connection. Use an extension coaxial cable if necessary to reach the modem.
  • 3 Connect the CAT 5 networking cable from the cable modem where it is marked "PC" (or something similar) and connect the other end into the back of your computer where the networking card is. These connections are RJ-45 connections that look like oversized telephone jacks. If you also have telephone service through your cable provider, you will want to connect the telephone line into the port on the back of the cable modem marked "Telephone."
  • 4 Connect the power cord into the back of the cable modem and plug it into a power strip with power surge protection. The modem should power on by itself once it is plugged in. It will cycle through a power on self test and then make the connection to your cable Internet provider. Once the lights indicating power and cable are green, you are ready for Step 5. It could take several minutes for the modem to connect to your service provider.
  • 5 Turn on the computer and test out your Internet connection. Should your computer still have a problem connecting to the web you may need to reset your cable modem. You will find a small recessed button the size of the head of a ballpoint pen either on the back or front of the modem. This button will be marked "Reset." Pushing it once will allow the modem to reboot and reset all its connections. Turn off the computer before resetting the modem to allow the computer to flush all the networking connections out of its memory as well.

  • If the power goes out and your connection is not restored when it comes back on, always reboot the devices in this order: cable modem first, computer second. Keep the cable modem where it can get proper ventilation. Call your cable Internet provider if you get frequent interruptions to your cable Internet service and rebooting the modem does not solve the problem.

Problem connecting external verizon modem to computer- error msg 'network cable unplugged'

Possible reason why your getting this message are the following.

    1. defective ethernet cable
    2. defective lan port on the modem.

I would advice you to do the following
    1. Try another working cable
    2. If your modem has multiple lan ports ( modem/router)
you can plug it on the other LAN ports and see if it will lid up
3.If you have a spare computer to try on the modem , please do so, so you can further isolate the problem . If its a modem port problem or your computer itself

    Cheers.

I am not getting a signal on my laptop with the netgear box. the model # is wgr614. I am hard wired into my modem now. I couldn't remember my security password so I pushed the reset button on the back. ...

When you press the reset button on your router, you essentially erase all of the settings back to factory defaults. You will have to set up your router as if youre connecting it for the first time. You need the default gateway IP address (this is needed to directly access the router itself), and information based on your internet connection type (cable modem or DSL). If you use a DSL modem, you may need your username and password (this should have been provided for you when you got your service; call your provider's customer service if you dont have it). The setup CD that came with your router can (and most times will) help you with setting up your router. Newer setup CDs do most of the work for you. Follow the CDs instructions and refer to the owners manual for more info.

I'm trying to get my Asus WL-520GC wireless router to work, but when I connect the Cable modem via the WAN to the router then the Router to the PC via the LAN, I can't get internet, so obviously something...

Try rebooting the computer, if it does not pick up an IP address. Try taking the router out of the mix. If the computer gets an IP address from the modem then you need to reset your router. If your PC does not connect straight through the modem. Call your provider to make sure they are communicating with the modem. If they are communicating then you need a new NIC.

Every time we try to use the internet it says unable to find server, if we unplug the ntl modem and plug it straight back in the internet connects how do we solve this

sounds like the internet connection is not setup to Ur modem. When u unplug it redetects the modem and connects. try uninstalling the modem from the control panel - system - device manager. keep the modem connected and reboot. U may have to use control panel - add/remove programs any programs the modem cd installed. on reboot use the modem cd only to get the driver and let windows control the modem.

When I try to reinstall my router I can't get beyond the first step as the disk thinks our computer is not connected to the internet when it is. It convinces my computer that it is no longer connected....

Step 1: Turn off your computer, router, and disconnect the power to the modem.

Step 2: Connect one cable between the modem and the router's internet port

Step 3: Connect another cable between the router and the computer.

Step 4: Turn on the computer, then the router, then the modem - in that order.

Step 5: Now try running the setup disk.

Explanation: The modem has a security feature that disallows more than one device from connecting to it at one time. Once a specific device is connected, the modem expects that device to be connected at all times. If you unplug your computer from the modem and plug in the router without disconnecting the power to the modem, the connection will be rejected. This probably explains the reason for the error message you were receiving.

Furthermore, you do not need the installation disk in order to install your router. Open your browser and type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar. A username and password screen will appear, the default is usually admin/admin for both, but if that doesn't work just try admin in the password field. When you have successfully logged into the web utility, you will be able to alter the settings at your discretion. For the most part the router will work upon proper cable connections, however you will want to enable security features to prevent attackers from gaining access to your computer.

    Netgear WGR614

First thing I did with my Netgear is this.
Plug in the dsl/cable modem to the PC directly. Then install the driver on the cd. If you are one of the unlucky types like I was, the router didn't come with a cd. Try going to Netgers page see if they have a driver. Most are basically auto install. Try this before you check the netgear site though. Plug in the cable/dsl modem to the router and the pc to the router. Resstart everything. This includes the modem, router and pc. When it pops back up, try seeing if that works. if not, try opening up Internet explorer. Type this in to the url. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0
That should bring up the netgear setup page for the router. If it ask for a password, the password on mine was
    username - admin
    password - password
It has an auto configure tab so click on that and that should automatically take care of everything for you. Let me know what happens!
