Question about Welding Tools

1 Answer

I just purchased a brand new Lincoln Weld Pak 140 HD. It worked for a few seconds and now it won't arc; however, the fan works and it feeds wire. I have disconnected the cable and re-attached it. I have never welded before and I bought it to learn. The reset button didn't trip. I have no idea what I did or how to fix it. Did I somehow burn something out. It literally only worked for a couple seconds.

Take it back if you followed the directions correctly. It is very hard to burn these out when new

Make sure the wire feed is clean at the tip. Cut the wire before you weld. If dirty it will not strike an arc

I have no gasflow it sounds as if the gas is leaking at the feed rolls

there is no seal at the feed rollers around the wire as it requires the correct gauge wire and feed hole to slow down the loss of gas at that point ( easier for the gas to escape up the wire housing and out the welding end )
the gas is allowed to flow when the welding trigger is operated as that opens a gas solenoid that allows gas to the welding wire tube to exit past the shroud around the welding point

read you user manual well to be acquainted with the machines operation, and if there is a persisting problem talk with your supplier and consider a warranty service check

Weld-pak 100 Hd Problem

There is a reset button located in the wire feed spool compartment,
check to see it stays in when pushed. It is a safety when the machine
overheats, it normally resets when machine cools off. If it is working properly I suggest contacting Lincoln Electric Dealer for service.

Weld arc not stable. Wire feeds, good ground,

Arc blow could be the cause! Put your ground on the work piece and weld away from it. If you weld toward a ground clamp the magnetic forces will blow your arc around sometime. When taking a cert this simple mistake can make or break ya on your cap or reinforcement beads.

Check the voltage at the wire feed motor when the trigger is pulled.

I had a Weld Pak 100 that with 0 volts at the wire feed motor, and the problem wound up being that 2 of the big power (stud) diodes were shorted.

Lincoln Weld Pak 100 arc welder troubleshooting

There can be a switch that makes the wire electrically "dead" so it can be fed through the liner. Also suitcase style welders have a sensor wire with a clamp that must be connected for the arc to be able to be struck.

The wire feed on my welder will not work.

Maybe you can get lucky like I did . Some times the acr volt selector switch gets corrosion in it and wont let the circuit board know to send power to the wire feed motor. You can cycle this arc volt. switch in my case it is the a,b,c,d,e, switch back and fourth a few times and this will brake the corrosion and your wire might feed again as mine did . This corrosion build up happens from not using and or sollecting the switch much usually on a welder at hm that gets very little use. it is common good luck .
