This was bought at an estate sale and I'm trying to find out where to connect the ethernet cable to set her up on qwest home internet. Either I'm nuts or the ethernet cable included with the set up...

the two lines in the back, if they are too small for the ethernet cable, are telephone jacks for a phone modem. look and see if there is a "line in" and "line out" labeled, or a picture of a telephone next to one of the jacks- if so, then this is a phone modem card, and not an ethernet card. ethernet cards ONLY have one jack.

Can't set up dial-up connection

Restart the computer.
Enter BIOS setup.
Click to "disable" both the COM1 and COM2 (or Serial1 and Serial 2) ports.
Save-and-exit from BIOS setup.
Restart Windows.
The modem should now be assigned as 'COM1', and should work.

maybe you have to wait for your provider for them to isolate the problem, it seems that your modem got hit maybe by high surge. ask them to bring a spare modem for isolation.. there is no way for you to isolate the problem coz you've already done the basic....

Just changed my dsl and I have a router too.

you'll need to use your web browser to access and configure the modem, like this:
1) connect your computer ethernet to the running modem, wait about 1 minute..
2) click start, run, type cmd in the run dialog, click ok
3) in the command window type ipconfig then enter. write down the gateway address, probably 192.168.0.1 or something similar
4)open your browser, wait for the error, then type that address into your address bar. that should get you into the modem where you can do it's setup.

I have a Qwest Actiontec modem that has worked fine until today. Now the DSL light is blinking and the Internet light does not come on. I have rebooted, but no fix. thanks!

If the DSL light is blinking it means that there is no DSL carrier signal to your modem. Check the phone line and make sure you have no open lines and filters are on all the devices hooked up to your phone system except your modem. You can check for an open line by hooking up a phone to the phone line going into your modem and listen for a dial tone.

Want to use Dlink DI-514 with Qwest modem to hardwire 2 computers

Believe it or not, Actiontec modems from Qwest are setup as a router already (even though ports are missing from it). You should use a switch instead of another router. Otherwise you will have to configure the DI-514 to act as a switch rather than a router. This is done by assigning a new starting IP address into your DI-514. By default both routers use 192.168.0.1 as the default. You will have to plug the DI-514 seperately into a computer (to take it off the network) and assign a new starting IP address for the DI-514 such as 10.150.1.1 for example. Then you will be able to get it work. I would strongly recommend using a switch instead and turn the wireless on the modem itself (this is why the modem is the router). It will save you some headaches if the power goes out.

I need info about connecting to the internet via modem

I assume when you say you want a modem, it's because you want a wired connection to the internet. Your HomePortal already has an integrated ADSL modem, and it will not be possible for you to add another one to your line.

If you want a wired connection to the internet, you can either run ethernet cable from the HomePortal downstairs, or you can use a wireless bridge like the SMC EZ Connect g. (There are several brands of adapters that are marketed especially for gaming consoles, but they function similarly to the non-gaming bridges.) The instructions included with the equipment will tell you how to enter the necessary security information for your network.

Also, if you'd like to avoid switching the cable connection every time you move between the X-box and the computer, you can run the wireless bridge into a small network switch, and then plug both items into that. (This would also work with the cable from downstairs if you choose that route.) This gives the added advantage of allowing simultaneous access by both machines.
