Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have just purchased an LG GSA-H55L DVD burner in an external enclosure. It is conected to my laptop via USB. I cannot get the Laptop (running XP) to recognize the drive as something OTHER than a generic CD-ROM. I bought this thing so that I could BURN disks. How can I get it to do that? Is there a driver that I can download from somewhere?

I have tried all of the firmware drivers and updates that I could find for this drive. The problem is that they are all for the INTERNAL version and do not recognize the EXTERNAL drive. I believe that I have found a solution to MY problem. I do not know that it will help OTHERS, but I will post it here just in case it may. I had a trial version of NERO 8 on my laptop. The LG Burner came with a stripped down version of NERO 7 bundled with it's software. When I tried to install the software bundle, it SKIPPED the NERO 7 software, because I had a LATER version of NERO ALREADY. My TRIAL ran out and I had to un-install the TRIAL software. I RE-INSTALLED the NERO 7 software that was bundled with my BURNER, and I noticed that the DRIVER software loaded ALSO! The drive seems to be working fine now. Thank you for trying though!

    Thank you,

    Hugh

I had already TRIED your suggestion. I do give you kudos for attempting to help. I had tried the GSA-H55L 101 Firmware Update, the GSA-H55L 102 Firmware Update, and the GSA-H55L 105 Firmware Update. I had even tried the GSA-H55N 105 Firmware update since THAT was what my computer seemed to THINK it saw BEFORE I stumbled upon the fix. None of them helped. Each time I ran the firmware, the program would tell me that it could not find the drive. The REASON was, I have since discovered, because the program does not LOOK for USB connected drives, but only ATA drives. The driver that I NEEDED was PxHelp20.sys.

PxHelp20.sys seems to be a proprietary driver from a company called Sonic Solutions. It came with a copy of NERO 7 that was bundled with the software that came with my DVD BURNER. SO FAR, the only places that I have found to DOWNLOAD it, have all wanted MONEY for it. One place wanted 20.00 for just THAT ONE DRIVER! You can go to SONIC SOLUTIONS and buy a whole PROGRAM from THEM for LESS! I have submitted a copy of the driver to DriverGuide.com. You can find it here: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/de... . You do need to be a member, and you probably should be signed in before attempting to click the link. I hope this helps anyone ELSE that may be having trouble with this.

SONY VAIO PCV R53 39 DS WON'T BOOT UP

Pull the harddrive out, install in an economical external enclosure.
The external enclosure has a USB cable.

Plug the USB cable into any available USB port, on a working computer.

Go to My Computer, or Computer; and double-click on the drive letter, that corresponds with the external enclosure.

(Actually with the harddrive in that external enclosure, it is now an external harddrive)

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVR539DS&LOC=3#/howtoTab

It's an IDE harddrive. Also known as a PATA harddrive.

A harddrive is measured across it's width.
2-1/2 inches across is a laptop harddrive.
3.5 inches across is a desktop harddrive. (3-1/2 inches)

So you need a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure.

I want to download all info from my desktop and motherboard into mylaptop

Hi Eva!

If your desktop is crashed, then you will need to verify if its internal hard drive is still working, and then conect it using an USB/SATA/IDE adapter to your Laptop. This is one: http://www.sataadapter.com/SATA-IDE-ATA-66-ATA-100-ATA-133-COMBO-ADAPTER/sata-ide-adapter-usb-hard-drive-sata-drive.html

If the problem with your desktop is with its hard drive, then... you need to take your computer to its manufacturer technnical service center.

Goto the web site of the company that makes the writer and reinstall or update the internal Firmware for that model of writer.

Very possible you got a bunk batch of blank media. But could also be the burning program itself (IE NERO) Try to reinstall what ever program you are using

How do i connect an external hard drive to my LG LCD Tv?

The LG's will support an external USB hard drive, but it seems the USB support was intended for thumb drives, so yuo need to do the following to get it working:
  1. the drive must be formatted FAT32 (like thumbdrives)
  2. keep the file names short
  3. keep the directory structure simple and as flat as possible
I have a 60GB laptop drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure drive working really nicely with good transfer rates. It takes it's power from the USB socket and is working fine.

Hope this helps.

LG super multi drive identified as CDROM by Windows XP

First, thank you for the excellent description. I wish more FixYa clients would provide complete information like that.

Unless you are having problems, I wouldn't worry about the product designation in XP since it's LG drive that is identifying it as such during XP's device discovery routine. Your new LG drive can handle all of the different DVD rewritable formats - i.e. DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW - so it appears that it is just using the first as its designator.

In my laptop, my LG DVD writer is designated as follows in Device Manager:

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device

LG describes it as a "Slim DVD Super-Multi Drive". I've had no problems with it, and it has worked flawlessly to burn CDs and DVDs.

Computer won't recognize new GSA-H55L Super Multi DVD Rewriter. I have it set to slave, all other settings seem to be okay.

hi,

try this...

> click on start--> run
> type in devmgmt.msc
> expand dvd or cd rom drives
> check whether your dvd rom is listed
> if so right click on that and select properties.
> check whether it is enabled or not.
> if that is ok, close everything
> open control panel--> add/remove hardware
> search for your dvd rom

let me know what is the result

thanks and regards
