Is freezer cooling?
a possible cause is build up of ice on the evaporator. take off the back panel in the freezer and check. also check the fan is working. if there is excessive ice build up, this can mean that the defrost system is not working. in any case, if there is ice build-up, carefully melt the ice off with a hairdryer

Refrigerator not cooling all of a sudden

Most refrigerators do NOT cool all of a sudden, but rather gradually! If you need to cool something all of a sudden, you should consider use a freeze spray of some sort!

The compressor should turn on after it cools. It shuts down if it overheats to prevent damage/fire. The compressor itself could be bad but more than likely the fan is dead.

The start device on some models of refridgerator for maytag and whirlpool have been recalled. If your appliance was manufactured in the last 5-10 years you may be having an issue with this component. Mine recently caught on fire at this device that is located near the compressor. If you would like to be a part of the petition for a recall on this appliance contact me at jboooor@hotmail.com

How can a refrigerator will cool without compressor?

they all have compressers or some way to pressurize the gas, this can also be done wioth a gas flame like in motorhomes, cooling is preformed by compressing the refridgerent and then decompressing it through a metered hole or valve in the high pressure line, this change in state from high pressure to low pressure makes the gas very cold.

I would find out what it would cost to fix it. If the cost is more than the price of a new one then I would get a new one.

Kenmore Elite bottom freezer refridgerator

I just went through this with my refridgerator and actually posted one of the questions. Here is what I found ........

In the freezer compartment behind the panel there is an evaporator fan which pulls cold air from the freezer and pushes it up into the refrridgerator compartment. If the fan is not working it is one of three things.. 1) there is so much frost in the fan area the fan blade is stopped and cannot push the cold air into the refridgerator compartment or the air channel is blocked. 2) there is no electricity going to the fan (usually tied to the door switch of the refirdgerator compartment, and 3) the motor is dead and will have to be replaced.

Solution to #1 - defrost but there is another problem in the "frost-free" part of the system which must be addressed or the frost will return and it will happen again in the future.

Solution #2 - check to see there is power to the fan. (most are 110VAC but some are 100VDC. Use a meter and check)

Solution #3 - If there is power, the motor is dead. Replace the motor. Be aware that AC and DC motors are different and replace per manufacture's specifications.
