Question about Cell Phones
If you are talking of a cordless phone then one reason could be a bad battery. It does not hold enough charge to let you get full range of the transmitter. Please replace the battery and charge it fully before you start using it.

May be the handset battery is dead or main power is out or unplugged check out these things.
Re-register the handset with the base, there should be an option on the PHONE SETTINGS to connect back up to the base. It will resync the base and the phone.
or try this, put the phone into the base then dis-connect the power and the phone line then reconnect them.
I hope this will solve your problem.
