Question about Sub-Zero Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a sub zero 550/511 and noticed recently that it doesn't ever shut off, as it used to. The other day I cleaned out some ice that had accumulated beneath the vegetable drawers, and noticed a thermostat bulb mounted on the back wall. Near it was a stray metal wire hanging out from beneath the back wall casement. Could the thermostat be broken and causing my problem? If so, is it easy to replace. Thanks Michael Segell

SOURCE: Freezer not working on Sub-Zero 550 Refrigerator/Freezer

You probably need to defrost freezer - frozen moisture possibly stockedevap. fan motor in the freezer. Turn it OFF for 24 hours and start itover. Make sure no moisture condensation on the freezer compartmentsurfaces as walls and shelfs. If so wipe it out. Pull out and remove upper basket from the freezer, push fan switch which is located almost under ice maker. You have to hear evaporator fan motor start working. Still not work? Call to professionaltechie! Good luck! :)

SOURCE: Vegetables freeze in the vegetable drawer. Freezer is on lowest setting.

Make sure that you realise that 1 degree is colder than 2 degrees and therefore a setting of 3 - 5 degrees might solve your problem

SOURCE: I have a sub zero 611 and water is accumulating

sounds like you have a blocked drain tube....when defrost system kicks in the melted water runs down a tube into a tray adjacent to the compressor and is evaporated by the heat. when the tube becomes blocked the water has nowhere else to go except overflowing and out through the refridge vent down the back and onto the floor of the refridge.

If you are hand with tools i can explain a procedure to fix this problem, If not call a service guy :)

You probably have some food on the way. Unload the freezer and see if the door would close better. Looks like you have a warm air leak.

The shut off arm is in up position. This is the off position for the ice make. Try pulling the down to the first level this will engage the micro switch to start the ice maker. Also, behind the ice maker is a 4 wire plug remove the plug and see if there were some electrical arcing. But first before removing the ice make plug--Please unplug the refrigerator first before work on the ice maker. stewbison

Our ice maker makes a little ice , and it doesn't drop. What is wrong with that? Also the house was built in 2005, but the previous owner hasn't live here. How come it can be that? Thanks

Turning the fridge temp down a degree or two will create more ice and at a faster pace. It usually takes a few hours to notice the increase in ice production.

good day,
Sub Zero makes both a wire device and on some models a round rubber device that slides over the ice level arm. If you don't have one on your model, call your local appliance parts house and check with them. The wire model just clips on, the rubber style has a **** in it. The purpose is to shut the ice maker off before it becomes too full, causing your problem.

Good day,
The important thing is to make sure the condenser coil is cleaned properly.
It is critical to the operation of the machine.
The coil is too thick to be vacuumed or brushed out. It is necessary, to blow the dirt out completely.
Service techs use compressed air with a hose, but a good substitute is a good push/pull shop vac with a crevice tool attachment. It's messy and dirty, but necessary.
After that the setting on the control should be set where you like it.
The control may be going out of calibration due to age, and as long as it can be set to any number that works, then that is O.K.
Although seemingly high, 7 seems to be the settings most Sub Zero owners like.

Ice cube tray overflowing-not shuting off automatically

Yes that is a plastic extension for the icemaker shut off. When replaced the new one should be secured with two small zip ties. You can use the ice on/off button to shut the icemaker off manually in the mean time. When ice is displayed in the panel it is on and when it is off so is the icemaker.

Sub-Zero 550 - freezer unit is chilling, but not freezing

Ice maker was intermittent at best - ice was often just a shell. After two failures to correct we had the ice maker (a Whirlpool - on a Sub Zero - Go figure) replaced. Then the paddle that detects the ice level broke. Next step a new GE.

I had the same problem. I found the piece of plastic in the ice tray and couldn't figure how to put it back. I ordered a new ice flapper from the parts place on the internet and installed it. The ice maker now shuts off. Good Luck.
