Question about HP Officejet 5610 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

New Computer I had dsl installed at home but my computer is old... I am looking for a new computer but dont want to spend that much. The only thing the computer will be used for is limited word processing and getting on the net. I know that there will be music downloaded and pictures. My question is what size of a hard drive would I need. I see 160,250.320, and 500mb. I am not sure if I just want the tower now or a package. I am not looking at spending more than $400 at this time.

These days hard drives are a thousand times larger than a few years ago, the drives you are looking at are probably 160, 250, 320 and 500Gb.

Even a 160Gb drive would probably be large enough for your described use. A 160Gb drive would hold about 40,000 songs or 80,000 high quality pictures.

Just got new HP laptop and i'd like to transfer photo's and some files from my old HP desk top computer. What do I need to do this?

If the old computer still works, see the following. Otherwise look for the * for a solution further below. If the old desktop has Windows XP SP3 or newer, you can use the easy transfer wizard. It is included in Windows 7.

If the old desktop has a network connection, you can use an ethernet switch to create a network to share files. Once both computers recognize the switch, set up a network. If you have Windows 7 on one computer and do not have it on the other, do not use the Homegroup network. This may come up automatically; otherwise, use the Network Control Panel and add a network. Start the Easy Transfer Wizard and set this computer as the new computer. There may be an option to get the Transfer Wizard to copy and install to the old computer. Note the code for the Easy Transfer Wizard. Then install the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard on the old computer and launch it. Set this computer as the old computer. Use the code given in on the first computer to synch the transfer. Go through the settings to select the files to transfer and then start the transfer. Prepare to wait a while for the transfer.

If you can't use the Easy Transfer Wizard, set the hard drive on one computer to Share (click Computer (My Computer) and right click on the hard drive and select Properties. Then choose the Sharing tab. Enable Sharing by clicking the Share button.) On the other computer, map to a network drive and locate the Shared drive. Drag and drop the files to the new computer.

If you already have a network connection to a cable or DSL router, you will be asked about "New network found" and to define it. Make sure to make it the home network on both computers. (If you were directly connected to a cable or DSL modem, then you will again get this question. Note the switch will not let your computers talk to the outside network without a router though.)

(Alternatively, use a cross-over ethernet cable with the direct cable networking option.)

Other options: use the Microsoft Easy Transfer Wizard to put the photos and files on a DVD, external hard drive or flash drive with sufficient capacity. You may need to download and install this program to the old computer. For the optical drive option, you need a DVD-RW drive on the desktop and a DVD reader (minimum) on the laptop. (You can use an external optical drive, if you have one.) Another option is a USB file transfer device. Some of these come with the Easy Transfer Wizard on their install disc.

*If the old computer will not turn on, take the hard drive out of the computer and use a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. Follow the directions for the device and attach it to a USB port on the laptop. See if the drive mounts (is listed when you open the Computer File Explorer). Then drag and drop the files from one drive to another.

Note you may need to change the owner of the files on the new computer. (This doesn't apply with the Easy Transfer Wizard if the old user is made equivalent to the new user in the setup of the wizard.) To change the owner, right click on the file in the File Explorer and choose the Security tab. Select the Advanced settings.

I hope this helps.

I have new direct tv installation. now my dsl keeps dropping out. i unplug the direct tv box and everything is ok?

It sounds like they have given you the base DSL service with the minimal speed. If they did, it won't be enough to run two things at one time on the same dsl line. Call AT&T and check your speed or service that was installed and ask if it is enough to run to computers on the same line at once.
Also make sure that there is no filter on your dsl line that goes to your computer.

Here is another tip; the longer the phone line from the wall to your computer, the slower the dsl service. Longer cords slow down your internet.

Hi, how can i uninstall the windows 98 se from my computer? also is it possible that i could attach my old pc to a DSL account? my computer is amd duron pII

You don't "uninstall" Windows. You reformat your hard drive and install a new operating system.

Your computer, with an operating system, will work just fine with a DSL account.

I have just installed DECT2015 cordless phone to replace my old wall mounted cord phone a few weeks ago. We have noticed that when we take or make a call on the new phone it causes our DSL internet to...

Make sure the two lines are not connected at some point throughout the home. Also you may try changing the channel on the handset of new phone as this may be causing interferance this DSL service. Channel buttons may be labeled 'Chan' on phone.

New computer running slow

if you are using dial up, you shud not have a modem.. modem is just for DSL connection
if you have a modem probably you are using a DSL connection

DEFINITION:
dial up - connection using a phone line with internet connection; cannot use fone while on internet

DSL/modem- connection using a modem plugged in with computer and fone line; able to use fone even when on internet.

Ipod nano

I have had good experiences with this

http://www.getsharepod.com/

SharePod should allow you to upload music from your iPod to your new computer even though your old computer no longer functions properly

If you have iTunes installed on your new computer, do NOT click yes when you plug it in and it asks if you want to format it. Formatting = BAD if you haven't backed up your iPod yet. To use the iPod with your new computer you will need to eventually format it, but not until you back up your stuff...

Hope I helped :)

Windows 98 changing from dialup to high speed

You can do this, but I would not recommend it. Windows 98 is very susceptible to malware. You can get things just by going to the wrong website. These are called drive by downloads. It will get very slow from all of the malware running on the system very fast.

Look into downloading a Linux distribution like Ubuntu, or PCLinuxOS. You will be able to find a linux distro that will fit on your old computer and be very secure. Look at Distrowatch for many more options.

It is not possible to use Windows 98 on the Internet and remain secure. If you post the model/serial number of the compaq computer, or its stats then we could tell you if you can upgrade it to XP or Windows 2000, but this may not be practical on older equipment.
