GE Profile GCG1580LSS 15" Built-In Trash Compactor with 1.4 cu. ft. Capacity, Hidden Controls & Remo... Logo
Posted on Jun 19, 2008

Our Whirlpool trash compactor seems to make a loud vibrating sound when the ram has finished and is coming back into position. We then have to use the "off" button to stop it from vibrating. The other button then is useless. Can you help? Sincerely, V. Norlin

Please respond to the above email:-)

I have a Kitchenaid Compactor - seems the Ram will not stop or disengage when it reaches the top of the ram housing. I open it & then shut it off otherwise, it will keep on making a very loud & consistent booming or hammering noise. Ram-ramming? yes that too!

Can't seem to get it to stop. I read someplace about plastic power nuts - they get stuck or break. I don't know where or etc but i'd like to give the repair a try myself.

    Thank you!

I have the same problem with a whirlpool model tf8503xlp1. the ram goes to the bottom and starts making a loud banging noise. I can unplug the compactor and the ram will go back up when it is plugged back in.

Ours was stuck at the bottom. Making loud noise. Barely over 1 yr warrantee, so took it apart(unplugged) on the bottom and saw the drive gears. Main big gear off motor had crack on center hex shape that goes over the drive gear to the side worm gears. Evidently the noise comes from that trying to drive and slips. I bet the unit will go back up for a time because it has no load as on the down cycle and the damaged part (plastic!) will kinda work for a while. Get new drive gear/pulley ( with teeth.)

GE profile trash compactor makes loud noise and pulsates

sounds like you have a bad ram bushing on unit... you will have to pull out and watch operation ...there is also a differential switch that tells unit when to stop that sometimes gets worn and needs replaced... it generally is at the top or on the side of bin ....most likely it is one of the two items that has failed...

Trash Compactor Problems Why it Does Not Work

Trash compactors can be a very nice feature and addition to your kitchen. However they can also be very hard to work on if they go bad. There are 20 some brands of trash compactors available, but the KitchenAid trash compactor is one of the most common.

If your trash compactor does not work at all here are some things that you will need to check.
First off make sure that you are getting power to the unit. Many are plug into by code a GFCI wall socket. These outlets do a great job of protecting against shock, but do a terrible job of staying on, especially when used on a motor that pulls a high amount of current when starting. It is not uncommon for them to go bad and trip for no reason at all after a few years. If the outlet is tripped, try to reset it by pushing in hard on the reset button in the center of the outlet.

If you have power at the outlet, then you will need to check through the circuit in the compactor. This can include a door switch, micro switches that sense the position of the ram, and possibly a key switch. Make sure that there is nothing stuck behind the drawer that would keep it from going fully shut. Check the position of the ram to see if it has returned all the way up.

If your ram is stuck down or if it will not go down, check for broken drive gears, belt, of chain. Make sure also that the switches that sense the ram position have not move and come out of place.

Your trash compactor will also need to be clean periodically. Food spilling on the tracks or glides can cause the drawer to slide hard or even become stuck. Clean all the slides or glides, wheels tracks and such with warm damp cloth and the re oil everything with a household lubricant. With time and use the wheels and bearings may also need to be replaced to keep your trash compactor operating well.

My Jenn Aire Trash Compactor Model TC507B1 does not turn. When I turn the start knob to on position, the compactor makes humming sound, but it does not seem that the ram is moving. I have checked the...

Sounds like the motor that turns the reduction gears which ultimately pushes the ram could be seized up. If an object was jammed inside which was to much for the motor to handle it could cause it to draw too much current seize up the motor.

My KitchenAid trash compactor model KUCP021RBL1: cycle does't end

Hello,
Most likely the motorwindings have been overheated after staying to long time in down position and trying to get up.
If there is a Emerson motor in your compactor than you will not find anything wrong most likely it is the winding of the motor, we have had this two times, changed the motor and the problem is solved.

Kind regards,

Paul

Have a Viking trash compactor VUC181 that will not open. Appears latch is broke. How can I get it open?

I have had this same problem and found two causes. Latch was never the problem.
#1 - Ram not in full up position. To check remove top plate and attempt to run compactor - depressing microswitch when ram is at the top. If compactor will not run you can check the ram position by turning the primary screw drive with a ratchet wrench. When ram is at the top position attempt to open the compactor drawer. The stop microswitch seems to frequently bend out of alignment - check the microswitch positioning before resecuring top plate and adjust if necessary.
#2 - Can (or other debris) is wedged in between ram and drawer. Remove back cover and carefully inspect insides of the unit - use a flashlight. Pry out any debris that may impede the drawer from opening. Attempt to open the compactor drawer.

Good luck,
Jon B.

GE Profile trash compactor

Sure is... The motor drives a ram up and down to compact your trash... Like most drive systems.. it needs to find a refrence position near the top of the stroke.. that position is normally sensed by a switch.. so it is possible your motor is bad or.. it is also possible your top sense switch is bad too.. For $400.. the GE tech should come out and stomp on your trash until it is compressed.... In either case.. if you are handy.. you may be able to open the compactor up ( with power unplugged) and check the position of the ram.. if it is near the top.. you may be ableto reposition it down a little then try cycling it.. It may buzz if the motor is bad ( windings shot) or it may work OK.. if it does and the problem comes back after you cycle it.. there is a good chance the top sense switch is bad or the windings in th emotor bad too.. Hope that helps...

Trash Compactor Problem

Had a similar problem with mine. I took it apart and found that the nut that is on the bottom end of the ram screw was loose. I tightened it and it fixed the problem. That was about a month ago. Now it is doing it again. I'm going to tighten it again this weekend and apply Loc-tite to the threads.

To get to the nut, you have to lay the compactor on its side and remove the plate from the bottom. You'll see a chain that goes around the motor sprocket and both ram screws. You need to tighten the nuts on the ram screws.

Hope this helps.
