Question about Transcend StoreJet 2.5 (TS120GSJ25T) 120 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive
In this case, there's a possibility that your hard drive (HD) is formatted in FAT file system. As far as I know, Windows Vista can recognize the HD with FAT32 and NTFS file systems.
The best thing that I could suggest is to connect your HD in another computer and see if the other computer will detect it. And if it does, temporary backup the files into that computer. But if not, you need to send your HD into a Data Recovery Center, so that they can recover your files and they will also attempt to format the HD.

Thank you and good luck!

To start, please take in accunt that there is a good chance you won't be able get back your data.
If an USB drive is not recognized, then it is often faulty, and only in some case data recovery is possible.
If you clicked start and started formatting there are even less chances that the data can be recovered.
Fist thing that you should try is connecting the external disk to a different computer.
If the disk is still not detected, then the next step will be taking the hard disk apart and mounting the internal hard drive onto a different USB enclosure (eg.StarTech.com 2.5in)
If the hard disk drive is still not even recognized using different computers and enclosures, then the hard drive is physically faulty, and data will not be accessed if not paying an expensive service (cost over $800). You cannot use software recovery on a disk that does not get recognized by the operative system.
If the disk is seen by the system, but you cannot access the data you can attempt using a recovery software, but after starting a formatting, I doubt you will be able to recover anything.
