There is a part inside the engine(the part that produces the picture) that is a mirror tunnel. The actual part name is "light tunnel" this tunnel takes the light from the bulb and compresses it into a smaller beam of light that is then shined onto the DMD(million mirrors) this produces the picture on a DLP TV. this mirror tunnel is glued together on all edges. One edge of your "light tunnel" has started to come unglued and has slipped a little. This causes the slightly dark area usually on the left side of the picture that you see. the light tunnel can be replaced as a single part. much cheaper than replacing the whole engine.

The screan is too dark while I am watching tv

If a conventional picture tube type set it will have a high voltage transformer inside with a focus and "screen" control--in this case the screen needs to be adjusted up slightly.

Adjustment is inside the set so you have to have back off and be careful as high voltage is present when set is on (need it on to adjust the screen control just up a tiny bit).

After we have switched the TV on a dark line appears around the edge of the whole screen and then it gets bigger and bigger making the picture smaller and smaller - is there a simple solution please

hit your TV lightly on left side or right side or on top & then observe ..........you will get normal picture or it comes & again it goes....if it is happening like that then following is the situation..........after 4 or 5 yrs in some TVs on main board at some soldering joints crack develops....then due to loose contact picture becomes small in size or abnormal width, etc ...........when we hit that lightly then those loose contacts joins temporarly & again picture appears for some time............so solution is ......TV main board should be observed carefully & most of the joints should be re-soldered.......only a good service engineer can do that........even after hitting monitor lightly if there is no response then main board has to be checked completely........in your case iam sure it is loose connection problem.........joints should be re - soldered ...100% it works again ................this problem cannot be solved by user unless user has idea about components( resisitors, transisitors, diodes,...etc) , have soldering iron , multimeter & other tools....................so contact good TV service engineer .............iam from bangalore - 09986222774 - sathyavijayasarathibabu@ymail.com ( computers, laptop, printers, etc )

Red cirle in the center of my screen durning dark scenes

This sounds like the light engine has gone bad or has dust/dirt in the light tunnel or DMD assembly. The light engine would have to be removed to check for dirt. If the engine is bad it can cost over $800 just for the engine not including shop charge. Unit would need to be taken to a repair shop to find out what is actually causing the problem.

These adjustment controls are on the HT transformer. (Large plastic block on one corner of the main board - looks similat to a distributor cap on a car.) They are usually a plastic pot with a cross in the end to fit a flat blade screw driver. (This is the large blocks Philips TVs usually have three adjustments on the transformer:

  • Voltage
  • Screen high voltage
  • Focus
If you can locate these controls on the transformer, make a slight adjustment to each in turn, noting where the control position is before adjustment, so you can put it back.
When you have found the right control it will go brighter or darker.

Before adjustment, set the TV brightness control to about mid way. Ideally the screen should have a completely black image to show up the scanlines.

Adjust the control until the scanlines disappear. Do not over-adjust or the screen will appear too dark.

TAKE GREAT CARE not to touch anything other than the control. HIGH VOLTAGES

Shadowing on right side of TV

Replacing the "light engine" fixed the problem. The technician said that there was a felt-like lining in the light engine to prevent undesirable reflections from the insides of the light-engine hardware, and that it becomes detached and blocks an edge of the picture.

We had a dark line along the right-hand side that was like looking at that portion of the picture through a 1" strip of very dark glass.

Because the DLP is new technology, we purchased an extended warranty from Best Buy (actually, their Magnolia subsidiary) which covered it.

The new light engine was slightly different physically, and the technician had a hard time getting the picture centered and aligned on the screen after installing the new one. In fact, he gave up on the first one and fetched a second one from his truck. He also had problems with the second one, but finally got everything aligned.

your best bet if you dont have a warranty on the tv is to get it repaired shouldnt be more then 150.00 you dont want the risk of having to fix something else if you get into the tv.
