There is a part inside the engine(the part that produces the picture) that is a mirror tunnel. The actual part name is "light tunnel" this tunnel takes the light from the bulb and compresses it into a smaller beam of light that is then shined onto the DMD(million mirrors) this produces the picture on a DLP TV. this mirror tunnel is glued together on all edges. One edge of your "light tunnel" has started to come unglued and has slipped a little. This causes the slightly dark area usually on the left side of the picture that you see. the light tunnel can be replaced as a single part. much cheaper than replacing the whole engine.

How to fix dark spot on screen?

If the dark spot is a soft-edged horizontal band all the way across the set, you have a fading Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL tube). Look for flickering or a pink tint in this area when you turn on the set - if you see either of these symptoms that confirms the tube is worn out. (The dark band will coincide with a pair of pink and white or blue and white high voltage wires going to the edge of the panel assembly.) Replacement requires considerable soldering skill; you have to make a small wire connection to the leads on the ends of the tube, and you can't heat the connection for more than 3 seconds or you ruin the new tube.

If you have an irregular (roughly circular or elliptical) soft-edged dark blotch, you may have an unrepairable* problem with the LCD panel, or there is an irregularity in the reflector sheet in the back of the panel. You may be able to cheat by removing the back of the panel and placing a spacer behind the reflector sheet so you get a little more light through the dark spot - but this may cause shading of the surrounding area. Be careful not to detach the circuit board from the edge of the panel, and avoid touching the electronic circuitry - it's vulnerable to static electricity damage from your fingers.

If the dark spot has hard edges (the pixels right next to it are working normally) and is completely black, the problem may be in the electronics, or it could be broken pixels in the panel (those are not repairable). You would have to provide some detail on the shape so we can figure out where to look.

*Sometimes uneven lighting as a result of a panel fault can be remedied by gently massaging the face of the screen to redistribute the liquid crystal material, but the success rate is low. You can easily make things worse, but if you can't stand it the way it is, you haven't lost anything but some time.

Left side of screen is dark

When you say the screen is dark, do you mean that the picture is still faintly visible or is the left side black with a sharp edge between the black and the visible picture?

If the screen is dark with a faintly visible picture then you have a faulty backlight. This could be due to the inverter board, which can be repaired or replaced, or it could be the CCFL tube which is a bit harder to replace.
If the left side is completely black with a sharp edge then the LCD itself is faulty and may require replacing.

In any case, any of the problems listed above should only be repaired by a competant electronics engineer.

Dark black spots around the edges of LCD TV

this issue is tape from the edge of the panel falling onto the screen. You will have to remove the cabinet and the panel from the bezel(front cabinet).remove the screws from the lcd outer edge. Take of the tape.Be very carfull of the ribbon cable that goes to the lcd controller and to the lcd screen itself. They break easy. If you do , its over. you will need a new panel. to much money and work. best to leave it alone.I have fixed it several times for people with warrentys. It is just anoying but will not hurt your tv.

Panasonic PV-7451 VHS

I don't recognize your first problem.  The "light to dark" issue I believe is intentionally engineered (mine does it too); it prevents recording DVDs on to tape.  Try running the DVD player directly to the TV.  Radio Shack used to have a box that would correct this issue too, you might check there.

Shadowing on right side of TV

Replacing the "light engine" fixed the problem. The technician said that there was a felt-like lining in the light engine to prevent undesirable reflections from the insides of the light-engine hardware, and that it becomes detached and blocks an edge of the picture.

We had a dark line along the right-hand side that was like looking at that portion of the picture through a 1" strip of very dark glass.

Because the DLP is new technology, we purchased an extended warranty from Best Buy (actually, their Magnolia subsidiary) which covered it.

The new light engine was slightly different physically, and the technician had a hard time getting the picture centered and aligned on the screen after installing the new one. In fact, he gave up on the first one and fetched a second one from his truck. He also had problems with the second one, but finally got everything aligned.
