Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My ISP is Mediacom and since I began using them I have had the same RCA / Thomson 425 Modem. This was years ago and during that time I have made the upgrade to "wireless network", 802.11g to 802.11n (with my wireless router) and changed my subscription to the Max service they offer. Is my modem holding me back from the best performance I could be achieving? I am reading about new faster, speedier modems. If so, any thoughts on what types of modems will give me the best service? It is a DOCSIS 2.0 and I now see DOCSIS 3.0 modems. Thanks

Firstly it makes no difference if you have a wireless network on 802.11n unless all the devices on the network are using 802.11n adapters. This means if you have a router or a wifi phone working on basic 802.11g (55mbs data) the whole network will run at the speed of the slowest device.

Now about the Thomson modem DCM425 and the ISP service. The maximum speed Docsis 2.0 protocol can support is 38mbps. The maximum Docsis 3.0 offered in US is around 120mbs. The Max service offers about 20mps (see link) which means you are within the capacity of the cable modem.

Hope this helps.

I would appreciate if you give me some reason as to why you thought my solution was not adequate. I thought I answered all parts of your query. It is helpful if you give a reason for providing the 2 finger rating. If it has occured due to some error than I would appreciate if you post a comment and I can get it fixed.

It should have been a rating of 1 finger in all honesty.
First, I was not asking about wireless network protocol. But if I was you totally blew it. The whole network will not run at the speed of the slowest device.
I also didn't need a link to an add for the service I have. I know what my provider claims the speeds are.
No info on subject of question.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

I answered the questions you had asked and clarified your cable modem was capable of going higher speed compared to the service your ISP is providing. Hard to make recommendation if I don't know which area you are located in. In addition, I clarifed for you that having 802.11n wireless had no affect if the devices were not 802.11n compatible. If you can prove to me that the wifi network does not come down in performance if all the devices are not using the same protocol then do so.

Thanks for taking the time to clarify the rating you gave..

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

How to setup a rca thomson digital broadband to a tm router

You have to reboot your modem anytime you connect a new device to it, this is what is great about routers! They act as the reference device to your modem since the modem can only "pair" with 1 mac address at a time, this allows you to connect and disconnect devices to your internet without having to reboot your modem and to also have multiple device use the same internet service at the same time.
Unplug the power to your modem and just follow the directions that came with your router on how to wire it to your modem and set it up. Once you are done plug your modem back into power and you should be up and running.

I don't know how to find the 16 key element for Mediacom to enter

Are you trying to set up the router.
You can do it manually without the CD.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem
Then you need to connect the computer to the router ad the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

I use the RCA model 425 modem through Media Com. My wiring for internet enters a bedroom. Now I also want to hook up a tv using this modem. A Media Com employee suggested using a splitter. Will this work...

Theoretically you can because the purpose your cable serves is a conduit for data transmissions. Just a few cautions here. Just as in any circuit, the more the wire is spliced, split, or anything that taps into it on its way . to the modem will add resistance to the line, thus it could degrade or "slow down" your signal. There is a splitter I know mediacom haves that will help with lessening this effect.

My laptop indicates that I am connected to my wireless connection but I am unable to connect to the internet. Any advice?

Has your wireless router/modem been configured to your ISP's instructions.
You should also contact your ISP to get them to test the connection to your router/modem especially if you have a DSL modem.

Once the AOL Easy Installer is downloaded, double click the file: ST_V1.exe This will launch the modem router installer and show the "Welcome" screen. Click the Start Installation button to continue. If you wish to cancel, click the Cancel Installation button. Read the next page carefully. The text advises to close any running programs, ensure to close your AOL software also. Click Next to continue. Please Note: Connect a DSL filter to each telephone socket that is in use for telephones, dial-up modems and fax machines, etc. If you require additional DSL filters, order online at AOL Keyword Broadband Extras. Notes: Ensure to use AOL 8.0 or above. The AOL account to be used for the modem router set up must be a General (18+) account. This installer is not supported with a modem router containing beta firmware.
