Question about Gateway Convertible CX2620 Notebook

2 Answers

I have a gateway convertible notebook and the screen is no longer working.. it turned red on start up and then black.. i am currently using a monitor which works, and sometimes if i switch back to the screen it does show up red for a moment or two but then goes back to being black.. the touch screen part still works.. does the whole screen need to be replaced or do you think it is something small like a wiring issue.

its a touch screen convertable notebook.. i can still use the screen as a touch screen and have it show up on the monitor.. and you are indeed correct.. the monitor would not be working if my video card was bad.. that much i know.. but since i can use the pen it came with for the touch screen and that still works im wondering if a internal cord has a kink or if there is a special light or something that needs to be replace.. but i dont know that much about these notebooks to know what the problem would be.. and i dont want to pay to have a computer tech assess it.. lol

The problem is a back light problem and could be caused by a faulty inverter or most likely a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link to determine the fault and fix :-

I suspect that it is probably a bad screen- you mentioned that one display does work, so it's not likely the video card. However, you can try reseating the cable- but the behavior you're describing does sound like a bad display

I suspect it may be a problem with the video cable coming from the convertible tablet, up through the hinged support for the LCD screen, AND/OR the screen Inverter.

I would like you to connect a VGA monitor, to the VGA port on the back of the convertible tablet. The VGA monitor will now be an External Monitor.

[ Looking at the rear of the convertible tablet, start at the Left side.
Vent, USB port, Monitor port. The Monitor port is the VGA port ]

The VGA monitor can be a CRT type, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor with a VGA cable.

Notebook OFF, monitor OFF, connect the VGA monitor to the M275's VGA connector. (Port)
Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type, allow it to warm up.

Turn the notebook on.
By the factory default settings, whatever is shown on the convertible tablet's internal monitor, should now be shown on the external monitor.
(VGA monitor)

If not, press, and hold down on the Fn key (On the bottom row of the Keyboard, all the way to the Left), and tap once on the F3 key.
(Top row of Function keys. The F3 key is the Display Toggle-Over Key )

No graphics shown on the external monitor? Hold down on the Fn key again, and tap the F3 key again.
There are at least three options available;

1) Convertible tablet's internal monitor - ONLY
2) Convertible tablet, AND external monitor
3) External monitor - ONLY

If graphics are fine on the external monitor, you have a problem with the video cable, and/or the screen Inverter. At this time we will bypass the LCD screen, and come back to it.

At the bottom/middle of the tablet's LCD screen, is the Hinge. The Hinge Cover is 'T shaped', and has one single Philips screw holding it on.
If you remove the screw, and the Hinge Cover, you will see two wire harnesses.
One Black, the other White.

See that these two cables are plugged in tightly to the connector.

After checking this step come back in a Comment, and state your findings.

Regards,
joecoolvette

That will be the first place to inspect, you MUST be real carefull when opening up this monitor since you can easily damage the ribbon cable attached to the front bezel.

I have a gateway m285-e tablet pc. I turned my computer off then 2 days later when I turned it on it appears to have a dead screen. I tried connecting an external monitor and switching to it via FN+F4...

Yup that is the Screen's back light inverter or CCFL(the actual light).
Here is sites which well the inverter for your model: (this is the cheapest I found in a short time but keep looking)

Here is a video that might help ya:
Just pay attention to the dismantling not the screen replacing, once you open up the screen its pretty self explanatory how to replace it.

Gateway PC Notebook/Tablet Model: CX2618 Monitor Replacement

First shine a flashlight on the screen. if you can see a very faint image on the screen the problem is the backlight. If not... it could be a few other problems, first test if it works on an external monitor. If it can then you need to cleear the CMOS. to do this you unplug the cord remove the battery and hold down the ON button for 30-60 seconds, then turn it on. If it does not work on the external monitor it is probally because you have a bad video card and need to replace it.

Black Screen

Look in the back of the Gateway where you currently have the video cable connected. If there are two connectors, (Side by Side) there than disconnect & re-connect to the other. Your display should come up. Don't be fooled. Most Pc's that have no display on their monitor is not a monitor problem but a computer problem.
