Hi,

Yes you can have the setup in your workgroup in multiple ways.

Solution1:-
The logic will be making your new wireless router to act as a wireless booster which will receive the signal from your old wireless Router and then retransmits the signal. But this needs some extra configuration on your new wireless router

1. You have to select the WDS ( wireless Distribution System) mode in the new wireless router.
2. Set the same SSID on the new wireless router.
3. In the new wireless router config page , search for the wireless signals and select your old router from that list.

The WDS mode tells the new wireless router to send/receive the wireless signal to the old wireless router.

Solution 2:-

Connect your old wireless router LAN interface to a network switch through a CAT5e UTP cable and the new wireless router to another port of the switch (use a cable which can be extended to the other room where you want the new wireless router to be placed).

Configure the same SSID you have set in the old wireless router.

Best Regards

Connect dlink 655 router. Wireless works well on laptop pc and on 2nd desktop wireless, but does not work on base set. Why?

There are number of reasons, but lets try something 1st
Assuming your computer is fit, try a WIRED connection. If that works, we know your base set is configured properly to receive the internet.
If it does not work wired, then we need to find out why (another topic, specify wired)
Things to look at for wireless:
The settings on your PC for the wireless adapter:
Go to settings (network) rightclick on properties and bring up the network device properties.
Go to the advanced tab and check the configuration of:
MTU (Maximum Transfer Units) is set to auto or to the same as your router
Channel, make sure your PC is on the same channel as your wireless is broadcasting from.
Workgroup, insure that your workgroup is the same for all computers in your network (for file sharing)
Make sure you have an antenna to receive wireless on your desktop.

The are the common things.

good luck and don't forget to vote!!!

the router's lan connection are already set if it works on one cable it works on all 4...same with the wireless connection ..
the thing to be donne is to check the lan card of teh computer to be set ok ...
for most routers it is enough to set the tcp/ip to get an IP automatically amd it will work ..cause the router wlan is now the connection with the provider ..and you are connected to an internal work-group in which the router is the default gateway ..and the sub-net mask is the 225.225.225.0 and the ip is the next in line after the router.s one ...so ...if the automatic get an IP do not work ...do this ..
set the tcp/ip to automatically get an ip address..
after that in alternate configuration..choose user assigned... configuration ..and in there as follow..
the ip adress the next number after the one you have in your computer ...ex: 192.168.1.2 it is your ip in the computer u use..for this one choose the last digit 3
2nd. the subnet mask choose 255.255.255.0.
cause being a close workgroup this is the one to use..
3rd the default gateway will be the router ip ..for example 192.168.1.1
and the dns same as in the router's setings on the wlan..the ones u used before having the router but the direct with the provider..or let them on automatic..
Important ...!!
this setings will depend on the Ip that your router has by the factory ...so ...better take a look in your configuration ..and just put the same numbers excemt the Ip ..this will have a unit in plus..

My router routes to my laptop within my house and

The possible cause is the router is not able to extend the signal to that range. Try using a range extender to boost your wireless signal. Signal strength depends on the router. So adding a range extender should solve this issue

The router is the internet access point in a fraternity house. The signal needs to be boosted to better the signal quality. What do you suggest?

Various companies make repeaters, devices taht you can place within range of the original router, and it will relay signals to further distant devices.

D-link used to make one...
DWL-G800AP High Speed 2.4GHz (802.11g) Wireless Range ExtenderI owned one, and it worked well, to get a signal from one end of a house to the other.

I don't think they make one anymore, but Belkin makes a F5D7132, which retails for about 70 bucks, but can be had to less than 30 if you shop wisely.

Since I can't tell what kind of wireless router you have, you could also consider getting a newer router, especially if yours is only B capable, as the G has been standard for years, and they just agreed on the N standard.

Access point router and wireless router communication

You said that the router connected to the modem is acting like an access point. that means the DHCP server on that router must be disabled. The second router is connected to the first with the ethernet port. What you can do, you can enable the DHCP server on the first router and make the second router work as an access point.
so that both the computers will be in the same IP address range.
If they are already in the same IP address range then you can try to ping the second computer's IP address form the first computer.

Newtwork connection

You have the right device to connect the two computers on your home network. Once you are connected to the router and internet on both computers, make sure that both computers are members of the same workgroup name.

While both computers are on, go to My Network Places and click on view workgroup computers, you should see the other computer as well as the one you are sitting at.
