Be sure to run the upgrade advisor:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx

Sometimes this can pinpoint any problems that will arise. The requirements for Ultimate are different from Vista Basic.

How far are you getting on the install or is it breaking before it even starts to install?

Hi Ghosh.

Cause of this problem may be:

This behavior can occur because of damaged random access memory (RAM) modules or a damaged RAM slot.

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods, as necessary:

  • Remove one or more of the RAM modules in your computer, leaving at least the minimum amount of RAM required for Windows XP installation. If this resolves the issue, either replace these modules with new RAM modules or reinsert them after Setup is completed.

NOTE: Verify that your computer's performance is not affected when you reinsert the old RAM modules.

    -or-
  • Install the RAM modules into different (unused) RAM slots in your computer.

    -or-
  • If you still experience problems before or after Setup, replace all of your computer's RAM modules with new RAM modules.

I having a promblem trying to load o/s,it start well to load but after just a moment before it coping files it gives me an error 1773

Error 1773 error symptoms can include slow PC performance, program crashes, system freezes, startup/shutdown problems, and file errors. Risks that can result from not repairing your computer include blue screens, file corruption, and hardware failure.

Fixing Error 1773 is easy. Download and install PC Health Advisor, a Microsoft Windows tool that will analyze your registry for missing, obsolete, and corrupt entries resulting from failed installations, incomplete un-installations, disabled drivers, and spyware applications.

I have a message that says , error message: PXE Media test failure chek cable

PXE or Pixie errors occur when the system tried to boot to the network connection and failed. This error usually occurs when the hard drive fails. If your system does boot to windows and you are just getting the error, then you can change the network card setting in BIOS to turn PXE boot off.
If the error occurs and the system doesn't boot to the hard drive, then the hard drive has most likely failed.

Windows xp setup halts

This generally indicates that the disc is corrupt. It can be anything from a scratch, degraded read section on the disc, or a distortion from the disc getting bent or hot (left in direct sunlight). You will most likely have to use a different disc for the install.
