Question about RCA P61960 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Blown CRT? Hi guys, I've got a p61960 and go figure the extended warranty ended in March! Anyway, I'm pretty sure that one of the lens assemblys (we always called them guns) is blown. I took the back off of the bottom of the tv, and when I look throught he back of the unit when someone pushes the power button on, I can see a blue spark at the bottom of the part that looks like it would create the light. This tv is 5 years old and seems to have had as good of a picture as when I purchased it. Even thought that may seem to be the case, I have heard that when one of these go kaput, you have to replace all three because if only one was replaced it would be brighter than the other two remaining. Do you know if this is true or more of a myth to help sell extended warranty..? Thanks

No you can replace just the one thats blown. They have G2 adjustments on the focus block to balance the brightness. Which tube do you need there are 3 ? you can get replacements at the following link just leave them a email with your model and which tube you need.

Sony has extended the warranty on the optical block regardless of purchase date until 6/30/10. I just had them cover the repair for me. They were very good about it. Call 1-239-768-7547 in US.

Sony KDS-R50xbr1 50" Problems

Here's the best way to get Sony's and/or the extended warranty company's attention and possible help.

Send an old fashioned letter to Sony and your extended warranty provider outlining the problems and your concerns regarding your TV. Make sure to prominently indicate that a copy of the letter is being sent to the complaint division at the attorney general's office in your state. After having to settle claims surrounding their optical block (light engine) issues Sony now understands that failure to address their customer's complaints may result in another judgement against them.

Good luck and give 'em hell!

Bottom right side of screen (about 4 inches high) has blue tint

I had the same problem with my 4 yr old Sony KDF60WF655 rear projection set, and I was fortunate to buy a 4 year extended warranty - because it was the "Optic Block", ($1300. -not incl labor), that was replaced to fix the problem. That part contains all new LCDs, & multiple Lens & some electronics. I had already got a new bulb (under warranty) a few weeks earlier, that I had not yet installed so the service guy did replace that as well. (This happened 3 weeks before my warranty ended).

He told me that he replaces hundreds of Sony Optic Blocks every year and that many Sony Rear Projection sets have automatic FACTORY extended warranties (up to 10 years), because of some known problems with the blue LCD panels. You might want to contact a SONY office & see if your set is covered.

ALSO - The tech checked my Service Codes & showed me the TV had been running for 10051 hours in about 4 years - on the Original bulb! He was quite surprised because he said the bulbs usually last about 5000 - 7000 hours. He also said it's good to replace them BEFORE they go bad, because they can sometimes burn out the amplifier that powers the bulb, (which is a seperate piece that attaches to the outside of the Optic Block). My TV is like new now.

Yellow tinge in picture how do I change the coolant fluid?

you need to remove the CRT from the set. the problem CRT is the blue CRT. after removing the gun leave the yolk inside. there is a drain plug on the side of the CRT remove it and drain into a hazard waist container and dispose of it as hazard waist according to your local regulations (ethylene glycol) very dangerous if ingested. use rubber gloves and becarefull of the CRT it can implode. after its drained you must take the lens assembly off the clean the CRT face. use 95% rubbing alcohol to clean the face and lenes of the gun. replace the lens assembly and refill the chamber with fresh fluid. replace the CRT assembly in the set. alien according to the service manual. check for leaks after warm up. if leaks accure remove the CRT and repeat the process but save and re-use the fluid reseat and clean all gaskets and make sure the screws are tight.

Sony blinks 7 times, pops and then turns off. I have an extended warranty Repairman says that it is the yoke and he will order the part. What is a yoke???

Yoke is the coil assembly that is around the neck (thus the name yoke) of the CRT tube. There is one coil that controls the horizontal sweep and another for the horizontal. As the electrons stream from the guns (or emitters) in the neck of the tube, they pass through the magnetic fields from these yoke coils and get deflected to exactly the right spot on your screen. Pretty rare to have a yoke failure though. Good thing you have a warranty.
Hope Ya Fix It!

Picture Brightness Flickers

could be one or more of three things.
1.could be the crt itself.(sony had a bad bunch of crts for this model)
2.could be the vertical ic on crt board.
3.could be the focus block
in my experience solutions 2 and 3 are more common....
