    I got this Aptive E-Series 240 Win XP Pro SP3 used. It only boots up to the administrator account which the password is foregotten too. It will not boot to a disc (IE8 installed probably) and guest accounts are disabled. If anyone can help it would be great. I have tried password recovery and a password reset program I burned to cd, but this computer (as of yet) will not boot to a cd even though I have the boot sequence set to 1 - cd-rom, 2 - HDD, and 3 - floppy. ANY help on this would be a life saver but I have a feeling there are no single sentence answers - but its worth asking. I bought this used computer as a back up should the need arise. But am "locked out" of using it....

If you have created another logon-ID on the computer that has "Administrative" privileges,
you can use that account to change the password for any other account.

What did you use to do a driver scan? A lot of times, those programs are a way to take your money. That PC is very old and probably does not have any updated drivers. It is not slow because of the drivers, it is slow because the technology is outdated.

I have an old ibm aptiva with usb port nad trying ot transfer files to external hard drive, however it doesnt recognize the harddrive, what can i do?


Depending on the external drive (try it in another computer first) the case may be bad. You can purchase an IDE cable at your local computer store, take the hard drive out of the case, plug it in directly, and voila!

If it's a desktop 98% of them all use the same power plug. Just call any local computer repair shop and they'll sell you one for hopefully no more than $5.

Need help transfering data from IBM Aptiva to Dell computer


Sounds like the older computer is a 98 machine - Data Traveler does not have 98 drivers due to its size. Your best bet is to find a smaller flash drive that is 98 compatible - or depending on the size of the data you could e-mail it to yourself.

IBM Aptiva and verizon DSL


OK Win98 doesn't play well with USB, when Win98 came out USB was very new, and NOT supported properly untill Win98SE... and even then it is a pain and real problematical. I would suggest you get a Ethernet connected DSL modem.. Else ya gonna have no end of problems regardless of what ya do including "Flashing" I think that model PC has Ethernet built in? otherwise get a PCI Ethernet Card and use that instead of USB.. ya be good to go. I would also upgrade if possible to Win98SE PLUS install ALL Updates there are still Win98 suport on the net, simply Google for it.. good Luck.

Monitor won't come on


When you say the pc is working fine, it's hard to tell if there is no visual from the monitor. Are you getting the 2 usual spaced beeps when your pc boots up, is your keyboard ps2(normal pin type plug or USB)check you have keyboard and mouse in their correct connectors (mouse-green plug, keyboard-purple plug) I'ts more than likely had a bit of banging about in storage and especially if it's been in a cool area, then placed in your house, there may well be condensation points inside which may take a few days to dry out. Try your monitor in a friends pc to eliminate that first.
