the valve handle is on when the handle is in line with valve body, off when crossed...are you pushing in on the pilot gas valve under unit? if not.. open bottom panel.. turn knob to pilot..push and hold down while sparking..if pilot lights continue to hold for about 60 secounds.. then release knob and turn to on! Also FYI... these units have a vent recall on them! please go to google and type in your heater, then model #

The only thing a fireplace like your has that could be faulty is the thermocouple or safety switch on the gas valve.
A thermocouple is a likely suspect. Look in your manual for a part number and buy a replacement. Cleaning the old one might work too if it is heavily coated with carbon.

Hi the key turns the gas on there is a arrow saying on /off turn to on .
remove front panel should lift up then down look for large metal plate should have lighting instrutions on them?
if not you will see a gas valve 1 maybe 2 black knobs look for the one with off pilot on , look for small knob red or black this the spark igniton , okay turn first knob to pilot and press in and hold in depress spark knob keep doing this untill pilotlights there might be air in the line so this might take time , when the pilot lights HOLD BUTTON IN STILL for 30 secs then release turn knob to on pilot should stay on if not do again , if stays on turn up thermosat if fitted or turn power on at switch you will have to find that will be near fireplace the other black knob turn sthe flame up and down hope this helps
