Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have an LG refridegrator (LFX25975) just over a year old. The water dispenser will sometimes get stuck on. The problem is with the lever that you press the glass against. It can easily get wedged into a spot and will not spring back to the off position. It is not an electrical problem or the actual valve. Dispenser works fine if you press the button. Also, if you go immediately from getting ice for your glass to filling up with water the door for the ice dispenser tends to get stuck open and will not close unless you give it a nudge. Nothing seems to have actually broken. It's all plastic and it just doesn't fit together like it use to. I know I could spend several hundred $$ to have it fixed, but then I feel it is likely to be in the same situation in a year. To get better access to this location I think I would need to remove the ice maker which I don't think I want to do.

Thanks for the input. It looks as if an outright fix may be beyond what I can do myself. I would be curious if anyone else had encountered similar problems with LG refrigerators. One person had posted a problem that sounded very similar to mine. Also, I looks as if LG has redesigned their water dispenser which could be a sign that they have realized that the original design was no good.

I am currently having a very similar issue. I called LG and since it is out of warranty (around 3 years old) I have to call one of their certified repair people and they charge around 70-100 dollars just to walk through your door. . .

Hi! Check this site to see if your warranty is still good, on units manufactured before Sept. 2007 it has 2 Yr manufacturer warranty, on units manufactured after that date, the warranty is 1 Yr. unless you bought extended warranty. The compressor, condenser and evaporator coils have 5 yrs. and 7 yrs. accordingly.
Register your product and inquire about your specific warranty. It is worth the try!!
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Well, I always usually try to fix a problem, if I can, but after listening to your whole explanation, I'm inclined to agree with you about the fact that, even if you do repair it, you'll be back doing it later, and on and on.
I'll tell you what I would do- I would contact LG, and explain what the problem is. Sometimes certain parts become recalled, and are replaced for free (along with the whole unit), and it never hurts to check. Hopefully, they would help with the repair cost, but I doubt it, but you may get some spare parts, in case it breaks in the future. A lot of the cost of repair can just be the service person having to run down the parts, charging you time and mileage.
Check with LG, and hope they can help you, and good luck!

Why is the water running directly into the ice dispenser and running out of the door when we are not pushing the lever to get water?

Sounds like the water valve is stuck or the wiring or switch is defective. As both ice and water are a problem it sounds more like a defective water valve.

LG refrigerator won't dispense water any more

The water line is freezing in the door due to deteriorated insulation. The only fix I have found to work on my fridge was to defrost the inside door with a blow dryer. Then place a weedeater replacement line (the orange 10" or so size you find at Lowes' or Home Depot) up through the dispenser nozzle, If the line only travels about 3-4 inches up the nozzle, then ice is still in the tube. Blow dry it until you are able to get water to dispense. After the tube is ice-free, place the weedeater line up throuth the dispenser nozzle leaving about 1/8" sticking out. The dispenser will still work with the line stuck in it. The dispenser will probably freeze again in about 8 hours, But all you need to do each time this happens is to pull the weedeater line out, dispense the water to unclog the ice, and place the weedeater line back in the nozzle. I have been using this method for about a week now and it works great. My GE Side-by-side is also 4 years old and this seems to be a problem with all of them. There is a part you can order to fix the problem, but I have heard it may not work.

The lever is stuck on my LG ice dispenser

You'll need to replace the whole ice maker system. Problem exist in the mechanical box connected to the lever which once opened is almost impossible to re-assemble. Cost around $95.00

Water dispenser gets stuck

It could be the switch that activates the lever. This happens when you have soda in the glass and then fill your cup with ice. It splashes up to the switch then it becomes sticky.

I have a 12 year old Whirlpool side-by-side refridgerator (ed20db) with water and ice dispenser. I have not used the water dispenser for years, but for some reason when I hit the lever yesterday, it did...

you have a possible water valve that is not shutting off all the way on the water dispensing side, it has 2 coils, one for ice and one for water. the other possibility is the dispenser tank is frozen, from being too cold in the refr. section and thats causing water pressure to continue running even when not pushing the lever. let the unit warm up slighty on the refr side and see if you can get water to flow properly.
if not working after warming up, then you might have to replace the water inlet valve.

Water dispenses without pushing lever

There is a solinoid valve that opens when you push the switch in. It has apparently failed and is leaking. Sometimes taking it apart and cleaning it will fix the problem.

Fabric Dispenser

The detergent dispenser is located above the detergent drawer. A water pipe is connected to it and water entrance and distributed to drawer's cells (following the programmed cycle) by a lever's movement (part of the dispenser). The lever movement is controlled by two solenoids that received their power from the timer. By opening upper machine's cover you will have an access to the dispenser. Disconnect the power cable from the machine before moving to next test !!!! Look first that they are not any disconnected wires. Move manually dispenser's lever and see if water running to all cells (depend on your movement). In case it doesn't work properly remove the unit from the machine and try to clean it (I hope it will help, otherwise you should replace the unit). In case it works properly (manually) - you should test by a multi-tester solenoid's resistance. the one that doesn't have a resistance measurement should be replaced. Good luck !!
