Question about Delta Woodworking Vintage Delta Dp 220 14" Drill Press Spindle Bearings

1 Answer

I have an old Delta D-220 drill press. While the chuck spins true, even at high speed, a drill bit will have a slight wobble towards the end of the bit. I tried many bits so its not a bent bit. Solutions? need new chuck?

You are right, but if the wobble is not too big to do drill jobs it can be used.Sometimes drill jobs need to be precise,so the you will need it just aligned.

What size taper is on a delta DP220 drill press so I CAN BUY A 1/2" DRILL CHUCK TO PUT ON IT

If its possible, pop along to a local machine shop and ask nicely if they could help with identifying the Morse Taper, if its a Morse. Go online for what tapers would have been used around that period. Drill chucks are usually 1/2 UNF mount even if its a late metric unit. You would need a Morse to 1/2 UNF or taper to taper if you buy a taper fit chuck.

Btd 140 rfe chuck not spinning true

The usual reason for major wobble of the spindle is a worn gearcase. It can easly be replaced. Any good repair agent can do it. If you want to do it yourself. Simply remove the circlip holding the chuck sleve on then take off the washer, spring and balls. release the light unit from underneath and take off the locking block. The gearbox cover will then unscrew (but can be tight) I think it is lefthand thread.Check spindle for wear and lubricate the bush bearing in the new gearcase, then rebuild in reverse mode

I've just bought my b&d cordless 14v hammer drill but the instructions were just a few pictures. one of them was of an allum key in the chuck and hammer striking it but i dont want to damage the drill....

Hi. Try the drill at slow speed without any drill bit in the chuck. Look closely to see if the chuck wobbles off centre whilst holding the drill firmly. If it does then there is a good chance that the chuck is loose from the body. If it seems ok then next close the chuck (tighten it closed) to see if all the 3 jaws are lining up ok and open it again to see if the jaws retract back down the chuck smoothly. (jaws are the small parts inside the chuck that grip the drill bit) If the chuck it seems loose then you can use a long allan key to tighten it up which is inside the chuck. If the jaws do not operate properly then i would suggest taking the drill back to b&q for them to fix, or replace the tool as it should still be under warranty. Good luck

There is not a slot to drive the moris taper out This is an old Delta Rockwell dp600 is it threaded

It is possible that this machine has a solid spindle but the chuck is held on the spindle with a tapered end like a Meddings drill. to remove the chuck you will have to make up an extractor out of 2 round bars with holes in them to fit between the shaft and the chuck with bolts though the bars to which you tighten which will force the chuck off the shaft with a little help from a hammer to shock it. It is not an easy job but I would only recommend doing this if you want to change the chuck.

No high voltage output

If you can't get power to flow once generator starts, try this...

Look in the manual. There is likely something about field flashing the magnetic field2.gif. According to the Briggs and Straton web site (similar solution for all generators), the easiest way to do this is to.
1) start the generator
2) plug an electric drill into the generator (without drill bit)
3) make sure drill is set to forward direction (if a reversable drill.
4) pull the trigger on the drill.
5) If the drill does not start, spin the drill's chuck clockwise (When looking down at the chuck from the drill bit end). Spin counter-clockwise if holding it like a pistol and pointing away from yourself.
6) Do this several times (hard) until the the generator will kick in and suddenly make the drill spin at full speed.
Be careful not to drop the drill or poke someone with it as you celebrate success.

Craftsman 10" bench drill press chuck wobbles

If this is a new tool I would take it back and get it replaced. The only other way to eliminate this problem is to determine if it is the spindle or the chuck and replace the defective unit. Warranty works better.
