One bad/faulty lead can cause a computer with lots of problems
replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
hope this helps

Dropped laptop today, switched it on and it starts up, but comes up with black screen with following message: Boot from AHCI CD Rom: operating system not found But before that screen comes up...

It sounds like you might have damaged your HDD when you dropped it. It's saying that the operating system isn't found, and it's trying to boot from your CD ROM. Either that or you might have left a disk in the CD drive, I'm guessing that is unlikely but worth checking maybe. By pressing F2 at start up and going into your BIOS (the Phoenix SecureCore Setup you talked about) Without changing any settings look through it until you find the HDD, or the BOOT options, if it lists a HDD don't get excited as it should be there even if it was damaged and is now unusable. Did you have your laptop on Hibernate, they say to shut them down if your transporting. Since when they are off they park the HDD, but when they are in Hibernate the HDD really isn't off it's on stand by. Making it easy to damage since the HDD is ready to read or write at the click of a button.

I get the error message operating system not found and cannot boot from dvd rom drive

This message is usually indicative of a HDD failure. Open the access door and make sure the HDD is properly connected. In rare cases the HDD is fine and the interface controller has failed.

HARD DISK NOT FOUND MESSAGE ON SCREEN

There might be few reasons for this.

The worst is that your Motherboard/HDD is broken, but I am almost sure that this is NOT the case. Motherboards and HDDs do not burn just like that !

The good thing is that you can 'see' your HDD in BIOS, which means it is not dead!

There can also be a wrong BIOS settings for the HDD controller. Check BIOS settings for your HDD-SATA controller. Somehow maybe your BIOS lost/changed HDD settings.

The problem is that I am not sure you can check your HDD on another computer. If you can do that, then it is the best chance to determine if something is wrong with your HDD, Also there (on another computer) you can more easy use some HDD test and repair software. Also, that way you can easy make backup of your important files.
Bott from WINXP BOOT disk and try recovery console (chkdsk/p at command prompt)

Try to download Hiren's Boot CD(http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd).

LG HDD/DVD Recorder Model: RH265

What you need to do is to put in your dvd that you wish to copy onto and then press the DVD button on your remote control. (this is next to the HDD button which is under the POWER button) Then follow the on screen prompts and instructions in the owners manual. I had the same problem but found the solution by mistake!

Hope this helps,
